Ballet barres have two available interactions: "Warm Up" and "Ballet Exercises". "Warm Up" is always available, but "Ballet Exercises" must be unlocked. On the Basic Barre, the interaction will be unlocked for Sims who reach level 10 enthusiasm in Music and Dance. On the Better Barre, it will be unlocked for Sims who reach level 8 in the dancing skill. If both a Basic Barre and Better Barre are present on a lot, any Sim who can perform "Ballet Exercises" on the Better Barre will also be able to perform them on the Basic Barre.
On the freestanding Better Barre, a Sim who is doing the "Warm Up" or "Ballet Exercises" interactions can be joined by another, as long as both sides of the barre are accessible. Sims will change into their athletic wear when using the ballet barre, and will change into their everyday clothes after they stop. Visitors can, and often will, use the ballet barre autonomously.

The barre includes the interactions "Warm Up", "Exercise", and "Train..."; "Train..." can be used to train other Sims in ballet.
If ''[[The Sims 3: Generations]]'' is installed, the player can click on the [[School#The Sims 3|school]] to have children apply to take ballet classes after school. Children in will learn specific dance moves that they can then show off to other Sims.
