The Cleaning skill is one of the seven main skills that a Sim can build upon. Cleaning skill points can be gained by tidying up the mess which occurs during daily life (for instance, washing up the dishes or taking out trash) or by reading a book. You can also gain Cleaning skill points by certain Career Rewards. There are several career tracks that focus on building the Cleaning skill in order to get a promotion: Culinary, Medicine, Science, (available with the University expansion pack) Natural Science, Education. For teenagers, having a high Cleaning skill (level 8 or higher) will earn them the §750 Kim Metro Prize for Hygienics, one of several scholarships available with the University expansion pack.

In Sims 1, Cleaning is a hidden skill. It's there, but doesn't appear in the Control Panel. It cannot be changed or improved unless Sims use an object that's been hacked to affect Cleaning, or you use a third-party character-editing program.
