His father Jeff died without achieving his dream to be the first man to set foot on Mars, and Daniel feels guilty for it. (When The Sims was released, Maxis was developing a game called SimMars, but it was shelved due to the overwhelming response to The Sims. It's possible, though highly speculative, that Daniel's guilt about Jeff not getting to Mars is a nod to that.)
Daniel has 9 body points, while Athletic jobs from Superstar (level 7) up require 10 body points. This may have been an error by the game's creators. (One outcome of the Superstar chance card is a promotion to Assistant Coach, but there is no Athletic track card that can promote a Sim to Superstar.)
