Yami Takeda is a Young Adult living in Bridgeport with his teenaged niece Lily Watson and his ghost-hunting roommate Malik Suyuti. Both drive him insane most of the time.

Childhood

Yami Takeda was born in Tokyo, Japan, minutes before his sister, Hikari Collins (maiden name Takeda). As a toddler, he and his family moved to his mother's hometown in Great Britain, mostly for the purpose of trying to get his sister, Melody Ann Watson (formerly Takeda), away from the stress of the big city, as they thought it might keep her from going completely psychotic and killing people. Partially, it worked, as she didn't kill people. However, toture is a different story. When Yami and Hikari were children, they witnessed their sister tie up and assault three boys with a baseball bat simply because "They insulted my jumper." After Mel's expulsion, she was sent to a school for troubled children in Germany, which she escaped from in the first week. Meanwhile, Yami and Hikari (who after witnessing her sister's cruelty became slightly neurotic) grew into teens. Hikari continued on with her painting, while Yami picked up an interest in martial arts. At this time, he discovered his bisexuality, though to this day he refuses to publicly admit it. Also during this time, his fighting skills became top notch, being put to use defending his shy twin sister from over-bearing teenaged boys.

Young Adulthood

A few days after Hikari and Yami grew into Young Adults, Mel showed up again, this time with a different last name and a daughter, Lily. No one is quite sure what happened to her husband, but whatever was his fate, they pity him. What happened next was a unanimous decision on the part of all the sane adults: they needed a fresh start. So, they packed up the house in Britain, got on a plane, and moved to the sleepless city of Bridgeport. About a day into their new lives, Mel created a hostage situation at the local office building. Following her arrest, Mel was judged an unfit mother, and Lily was immediately put into her grandparents' custody. Or, she would have been, if they hadn't refused. "We've already raised three children, including an insane one. We are done, thank you very much." Hikari also refused, as she just gotten married to her high school sweetheart, Jackson Collins, and didn't really want a child right away. Really, Yami was the only relative left who didn't live thousands of miles away. He didn't actually want to do it, but his sense of familial duty wouldn't let him say no. Thus, he and his niece now were stuck together.

Encounters with the Supernatural

A few weeks into life in Bridgeport, Yami was doing bills when he discovered that his small income as a teacher would not support both him and a teenaged girl. Seeing as even if Lily got a part-time job it still wouldn't be enough, they sent out ads for a roommate. After a veritable circus of odd characters (including a poorly disguised Mel), they came upon the last person to have contacted them: Malik Suyuti. At first, they had no idea what to make of this strange European-Egyptian man. From the moment he dramatically entered their door and announced his own presence, he was odd. However, the moment Lily saw that he was a ghost hunter, she was sold. Yami attempted to protest, but it was too late; Malik was already calling his sister to tell he'd found a place. Resigned to the fact that he no longer had any say what-so-ever over this situation, Yami simply made a mental note to stock up on pain pills. The next day, Malik moved in with the help of his sister, Isis Suyuti, and their step-brother, Adofo Suyuti. While Adofo said absolutely nothing, Isis summoned Yami to speak with her in the hall outside the apartment. When Yami asked her why she wanted to talk to him, she told him that it was no coincidence that he and Malik had met. "There are greater forces at work here, Takeda; forces that neither you nor I can even begin to comprehend. I must warn you now that your life will never again be peaceful." Yami dismissed her warning, thinking it was just the ramblings of yet another nut-bag. However, the next day after work, while he was grading his elementary class's papers, a strange noise echoed through the halls of Public School 67. At first, he dismissed it, thinking it was the school's faulty air-conditioning. But then it grew louder and louder, becoming more and more clear:

"Teacher... Help Me... Save Me..."

Immediately, Yami stood up, yelling at whatever trouble-maker he could think of to cut it out. That is, until the desks started to shake. He shouted that it wasn't funny, and whoever was doing this had to stop right then. And then one of the desks came hurling toward him, the ghostly voice now a scream. Yami barely got out of the way in time before the desk slammed into the blackboard. Still not really sure of what was going on, he ran straight out of the school.. and straight into Malik. The ghost-hunter greeted him cheerfully, helping him up. Yami stuttered helplessly, trying to rapidly explain what was going on. Malik simply patted him on the head and walked into the building. Thinking that Malik was headed to his doom, Yami ran in after him. What he saw terrified him. A roaring green transparent had formed inside the school, having knocked down several classrooms and eaten at least three faculty members (and Yami's boss). Malik, however, was simply staring at the monster, not showing any signs of fear or even mild confusion. Slowly, he raised his ecto-sucker thingy and yelled, "Say hello to my little friend!" Seconds later, the monster was gone, and several shaken teachers and admins were covered in ectoplasmic goop. Malik turned around, and said to a shocked Yami, "Well, don't just stand there, applaud!" At that moment, Yami began to think that perhaps Isis wasn't just another crazy woman...
