Fines are penalties that can occur in most games in The Sims series. Fines subtract money from the household's funds. If there are not enough to cover the fine, household funds will be reduced to zero. In addition, objects may be repossessed, though this will depend on the game and the reason for the fine.

Note that The Sims for console, The Sims Bustin' Out, and the Mac OS X version are based on the Windows version of The Sims. As such, fines in those games will be the same or similar.

A fine will occur if the police are called when there isn't a burglar. The first call will usually result in a warning. The next calls after the first one may either result in another warning or a fine. If the family cannot pay the fine, objects will be taken away.
On the Windows version, there is a possible glitch that the player will not be fined for calling the police and always receive a warning regardless of how many times they were called.
Firefighter
Calling the firefighter will result in a fine. Unlike the police, there is no warning message. If the family has less than §100, objects will be taken away. The fine is §100 in these games.

Magic
If a Sim uses magic in front of a non-magical Sim (a Sim without a wand, who is in the same room as the caster and is not the target of the spell), the Spellchecker will show up and a fine will occur.
Others
It is possible for a family to be fined for making too much noise. This usually occurs if a party if thrown or if the baby is crying.
Some chance cards may result in a fine. If the family does not have enough to cover the amount of the fine, its funds will be reduced to zero, but objects will not be repossessed.

▲==The Sims 2 and The Sims Stories==
Fines in The Sims 2 and The Sims Stories are different from The Sims. Unlike in The Sims, a sound will not play in The Sims 2 and The Sims Stories whenever a fine occurs. As with The Sims, objects will be taken away if the player cannot pay the fine; funds will not normally be reduced to §0. If the player has no objects and has less than §500, the police officer/firefighter will criticize the family for wasting their time in a similar fashion to the repo-man, and then leave.

Police in The Sims 2 and The Sims Stories will always fine the Sim without warning. The police officer will lecture the Sim and fine the Sim §500. The officer may take away an object if the player has less than §500. The lecture can trigger fury.TS2:NL
Firefighter
The firefighter will lecture and then fine the Sim. The fine is now §500. Like the police fine, the lecture can trigger fury. The firefighter will also repossess objects if the family has less than §500.

The Sims 3 fines work almost the same as The Sims 2 and The Sims Stories except that a lecture will no longer severely decrease relationship.

Police
Like The Sims 2 and The Sims Stories, the Sim will be lectured and then fined §500. The officer will also take away an object if the household has less than §500 but funds will not be reduced to §0. If the household has no objects that can be taken away and less than §500, nothing will happen but the Sim will still be lectured and the message of being fined will still appear. If testingcheatsenabled is used to spawn the police, the player will be fined (unless the burglar is spawned) as if they were called.
Fire Department
Like the police, the Firefighter will fine the Sim §500. If the household has less than §500 then the firefighter will take away an object but funds will not be reduced to §0. If the household has no objects that can be taken away and has less than §500, nothing will happen but the Sim will still be lectured and the message for being fined will still appear.
If the Firefighter was called (Either by phone or by fire alarm) and the fire was put out prior to the firefighter coming, the player will not be fined when they arrive. Like the police, if testingcheatsenabled is used to force the firefighter to spawn, the player will be fined unless if there is a fire.
Detonating/Smashing
In The Sims 3: Ambitions and The Sims 3: Deluxe, a Sim can be fined for detonating objects (or using Smash as a Simbot)confirm outside of the Junkyard or the Sim's home. At first, this will result in a warning, but after the first time, it will result in a fine. Fines may be cheap (§50) or expensive (§175,000) but this depends on the cost of the object. With The Sims 3: Late Night, the Sim may also get the Publicly Disgraced moodlet. While this does not automatically take away cash, it adds to the Sim's bills. Detonating objects in other Sims' homes does not cause a fine but this is considered inappropriate behavior and you will be warned accordingly unless your Sim has the relevant traits or lifetime rewards.
