Fireplaces are nice things to build but they can cause fires.

Fireplaces need to be placed along walls but putting anything in front of them, or leaving them lit for extended periods of time, may increase the risk of starting a fire.[confirmation needed]

In The Sims 3 they give the cozy fire moodlet. Cheap fireplaces can be upgraded to become fireproof or change their fire color, while the expensive types are fully upgraded.
