Discussion[edit source]

I think it's pretty obvious that the Sims series navbox is pretty large and quite overwhelming. Personally I find it quite difficult to spot the link I'm looking for, so I'm proposing a redesign to help make it clearer and more navigable. I've made a prototype on my sandbox. The main goal was to condense as much as possible without actually removing links and to give clearer focus to the games that were released in each "era", so to speak.

  • First of all, the navbox is collapsed by default. What we could do is make relevant groups uncollapsed on appropriate articles, e.g. The Sims section would be automatically expanded on all the articles under that grouping, but the other groups would remain collapsed.
  • Removed some redundant text like having each base game listed twice and "online games" since they're all in one group at the bottom anyway.
  • I moved the compilation links, they no longer take up a whole row since it's just plain unnecessary.
  • I also merged all the spin-offs into one section and then further into subgroups, since the Stories and Medieval offshoots don't really need to take up several rows for themselves. I think it looks much cleaner now.
  • I've also added different colours to help distinguish each section, kind of like we already have on the patch navbox. Except, I didn't want to use random rainbow colours, instead these ones are sourced directly from the dominant colours on the logos for each game so they are representative of these games. Having a uniform colour doesn't work too well on a navbox this large IMO.

Let me know what you think. --Dorsal Axe (talk) 22:55, March 1, 2015 (UTC)

I believe the template is the way it is for standardization purposes, most of our other navboxes are blue and I'm fairly sure they are automatically minimized. I wouldn't mind updating this template though, however I'd be happier with the stories games being placed with TS2 and the medieval games being placed with TS3, and maybe using the same color for the whole thing just so its more like other nav templates. ђ talk 10:17, March 6, 2015 (UTC)
Dorsal's navbox redesign addresses the main issue of current navbox; it collapses. I'm willing to ignore any qualms about the color, if only for the collapsible design. I support implementing the redesign. Ѧüя◎ґ (talk) 04:58, April 4, 2015 (UTC)
I haven't spoken up because I personally believe that the template is too large and ought to be broken up. I don't have any particularly strong opinions about other changes that might be proposed. -- LostInRiverview talkblogcontribs 05:17, April 4, 2015 (UTC)
I support about the redesign. It is cleaner and collapses. AStranger195 ~~Sign my guestbook~~ 14:27, May 2, 2015 (UTC)

How about we design the nav box similar to the trait nav box with the top tabs being the game era? Instead of three columns it could be two. Just an idea, it might look cool. UltraGamingKid (talk) 01:47, May 1, 2015 (UTC)

I believe it's quite fine and organized the way it is. Though I do +1 the idea for it to be collapsable. thatKitten come and chat! 09:15, May 3, 2015 (UTC)

And the traits-style idea. How about a collapsable, tabbed navbox? thatKitten come and chat! 09:16, May 3, 2015 (UTC)

Closed. Thread is old and shows no signs of coming back to life. Feel free to act boldly in implementing what was discussed here, or start up a new forum thread if you so desire. - LostInRiverview talkblogcontribs 01:25, August 14, 2015 (UTC)
