The Joy family is a premade family who lives in Riverview. Norman Joy is the father of Elaine Joy and the widower of Jenny Joy. They live in a nearly-historic one-story farmhouse at 291 Cypress Lane. It appears that Elaine wants to move out, even though she is also happy to look after her aging father. The family is probably a reference to the Grant Wood painting, American Gothic. Their last name is ironic, considering they are depicted as being from The Great Depression era, a time with no "joy".

Onomatology

Joy: To take great pleasure; rejoice
Norman: A member of a Scandinavian people who settled in Northern France in the tenth century
Jenny: The female of certain animals such as the donkey and the wren, diminutive of Jennifer
Elaine: In Arthurian legend; the mother of Galahad
