The kiosk is automatically included on many premade community lots in University sub-neighborhoods (such as the [[Student Union#Sim State University|Student Union]] in [[Sim State University]]), but it can be added to any community lot, including Sim-owned community lots. When it is in a Sim-owned [[business]], the player can adjust the selling price for the electronics. If placed on a non-University community lot, it allows teens, adults, and elders to purchase cell phones, MP3 players, and handheld games.

Aside from college community lots, if ''[[The Sims 2: Nightlife]]'' is also installed, they will show up in several community lots in [[Downtown (The Sims 2)|Downtown]], such as the [[Fresh Rush Grocery]] and [[Cold Issue Clothing]].
If ''Nightlife'' or later is installed, items purchased from the kiosk go into the Sim's [[Inventory#The Sims 2: Nightlife|inventory]], which allows Sims to purchase items more than once.
