The Shear family is a pre-made family from the downloadable neighborhood of Roaring Heights, available on The Sims 3 Store. It consists of the same-sex couple Dylan and Audrey Shear, and their son Charlie. This family is the first openly same-sex couple in the franchise to date and the only one in The Sims 3. The rest were added in The Sims 4 and its various content packs.
The mention in the family bio of "science mak[ing] it possible" for Audrey and Dylan to have a baby together may be a reference to popular mods for The Sims 2 and The Sims 3 that allow same-sex couples to have children who are the biological offspring of both or the hospital in The Sims 3: Into the Future that allows the mixing of DNA of same-sex couples to create a biological offspring. Indeed, Charlie seems like he may have genetics from both parents, with a skin-tone midway between Audrey's and Dylan's, as would be usual for a biological child in The Sims 3. However, this is still not actually possible in-game, and for the couple to have more children it is necessary to use mods or to have them adopt.
Since Audrey is Family-Oriented it is likely that she will want to have more children; this is even hinted at in-game, since next door to Charlie's bedroom (a child's bedroom with blue decor) is a room with pink furnishings containing a crib, likely indicating that the Shears are planning to try for a girl sometime in the future. There are also toddler toys and books and a high chair elsewhere in the house, even though Charlie is too old to use these objects, further hinting that the couple plan to have another child.
