Its official description alongside various images were accidentally leaked by EA in Origin on June 7, 2019, essentially confirming the earlier rumors as and leaks to be true.<ref>[https://simsvip.com/2019/06/07/the-sims-4-island-living-first-screenshots-game-description/ The Sims 4 Island Living: First Screenshots + Game Description]</ref> The expansion pack was officially announced during EA Play on June 8, 2019 and released on June 21, 2019 for PC and Mac. The PS4 and Xbox One versions were released on July 16, 2019.<ref>[https://simsvip.com/2019/07/16/the-sims-4-island-living-now-available-on-consoles/ The Sims 4 Island Living Now Available on Consoles]</ref> It is a spiritual successor to ''[[The Sims 3: Island Paradise]]'', with some elements of [[Vacation Island]] from ''[[The Sims: Vacation]]'', [[Felicity Island]] and [[Wanmami Island]] from ''[[The Sims: Castaway Stories]]'', [[Twikkii Island]] from ''[[The Sims 2: Bon Voyage]]'' and the downloadable world [[Sunlit Tides]] from [[The Sims 3 Store]].

The expansion pack allows Sims to live in the world of [[Sulani]], a tropical island full of deep waters, beaches and volcanic activity. Sims can enjoy themselves in many relaxing beach activities, lounging in cool waters, or exploring the oceans by either snorkeling or canoeing, where they can even meet [[mermaid]]s, a playable life state reintroduced in this pack from ''The Sims 3: Island Paradise''. Alongside mermaids, Sims can befriend [[dolphin]]s, friendly aquatic creatures. Newcomer Sims to Sulani can introduce themselves to the friendly locals, who have many interesting traditions and can teach them more about their culture through their folklore stories. A [[conservationist]] career is also introduced along with lifeguard, diver and fisherman [[part-time job]]s.

===World and neighborhoods===
Sulani is divided into three islands.

There is the bustling [[Ohan'ali Town]]. - This is where most lots on the islands reside and notably the most inhabited island on Sulani. It has now developed into the main town region.
On this island, there is [[The Sand Bar]], along with [[Ohan'li's]] own beach. Two sim families currently reside here: these are the ‘Hoapili’ and ‘Kealoha’ families. There are two free lots which would be the Lagoon Look, where it's partially on the water, and on the Tangled Flat.
On this island, there was once a tiny fishing camp which was in between the tropic jungles and the lagoon waters. It's now one of the most bustling areas of Sulani. This has now developed into the main town region. Despite the changes, the community hasn’t changed their deeply rootedness sense of community, or their strong connections to the island tradition.

[[Lani St. Taz]] is an idyllic tropical paradise where the beaches are filled with white sand, along with the water being warm and vibrant. The lush jungle environments are perfect for getting lost in the timeless island spirit. Some notable families that live here are the Kahananui and Ngata families. There is also the Sand Simoleon Beach, which has the trait of "oceanic paradise". It is a lot for yourthe sim(s)Sims to live in, but definitely build a house should be built on the 50X5050x50 empty lot.

[[Mua Pel'am]] is situated near the active volcano. Here, natureNature rules over this island, from the volcano to the gorgeousa waterfall to the secludeda cave. This remote island is the best place for exploring the beauty of nature. There are no sims that live on this island. There are currently two pre-built lots, the Admiral's Wreckage and the Caldera Camp, along with a free lot (40x30). Both ''Admiral's Wreckage'' and ''Key Point'' are "off the grid lots".

===Mermaids===
{{Main|Mermaid#The Sims 4: Island Living}}
Mermaids are like normal sims with their needs, though mermaids require hydration. In order to keep it up, you can: go swimming, take a bath or even drink some water.
Mermaids have similar needs to normal Sims, but replace the ''[[Hygiene]]'' need with a new need, Hydration. In order to maintain this need, a mermaid Sim can go swimming (either in the ocean or a swimming pool), shower, bathe or take a drink of water. In exchange for this restriction, mermaids have the ability to influence the moods and actions of other Sims with various Siren Songs, most of which deplete Hydration. While swimming in the ocean, mermaids also have the ability to summon an [[Dolphin|azure dolphin]]. Azure dolphins function identically to regular dolphins, save for the ability to summon them anywhere.
While in the water your sim is able to call upon the Azure Dolphin (thins action takes away 30 hydration). Mermaids are also able to sunbathe and sleep while in the water.

Mermaids also respond to the Ordinary Conch, an item found while Diving for Shells. If a conch shell is blown, mermaids in the area will make dolphin noises.
Once an "ordinary" conch shell is blown, any mermaids nearby will go to where the conch has been blown at and let out a sound that's sounds like a dolphin.

==Trivia==
* This is the second expansion pack for ''The Sims 4'' to include a playable [[life state]], the first being ''[[The Sims 4: Get to Work]]''.
* ''Island Living'' was supposed to be the first content pack for ''The Sims 4'' to be compatible only with {{WP|64-bit computing|64-bit operating systems}}. However, SimGuruDuke later confirmed in Twitter that the legacy edition has been postponed to allow everyone to play the expansion and that ''Island Living''' '''''still supports 32-bit.'''<ref> [https://twitter.com/SimGuruDuke/status/1138245606709686273?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fforums.thesims.com%2Fen_US%2Fdiscussion%2F960208%2Fisland-living-simguru-maxis-sourced-info%2Fp4]</ref>''' 32-bit support was finally dropped with the release of ''[[The Sims 4: Discover University|Discover University]]''.
* This is the first expansion pack for ''The Sims 4'' to not have a launch trailer as well as being the first to not release a launch trailer since ''[[The Sims 2: Apartment Life]]''.
* It is the first pack for ''The Sims 4'' to have announced its PC and console release dates simultaneously.
* Shovel & Pail (without face) from Blue's Clues
* Thirteen days elapsed between the pack's announcement (June 8) and its release (June 21), making it the shortest wait time for a ''Sims 4'' expansion pack thus far.
* This is the first expansion pack for [[The Sims (series)|The Sims series]] to feature a tropical world without [[hotel]]s or [[resort]]s. ''[[The Sims: Vacation]]'' introduced hotels and campgrounds with [[Vacation Island]], ''[[The Sims 2: Bon Voyage]]''<nowiki>'</nowiki>s [[Twikkii Island]] had hotels and holiday homes, and ''[[The Sims 3: Island Paradise]]'' allowed players to own and stay at resorts in [[Isla Paradiso]].
* This is the last pack in The Sims franchise to support Windows XP and Windows Vista. However, support was quickly dropped with later releases and the game is no longer supported by the two operating systems even if the DVD case or digital download requirements says it is supported.
