Olympus is an early prototype of The Sims 4 that was designed primarily as an online-multiplayer experience, similar to The Sims Online and The Sims Social. Development was started in 2008, but the project was refactored late into development as an offline single player-only title that was released as The Sims 4.

According to Charles London and Lucy Bradshaw, the online component of the game was abandoned due to financial risks and because of poor responses from focus testing. It was also partially influenced by the negative reception towards SimCity (2013). SimCity launched as an online-only title with multiplayer aspects, receiving heavy criticism from the media and fans after the game experienced issues with its authentication servers. The game's performance ultimately resulted in the closure of Maxis Emeryville.
The Sims Olympus was going to be an online version, similar to The Sims Online, of what is now known as The Sims 4 planned after The Sims 3<nowiki/>'s success. Development was started in 2008, but it was canceled and The Sims 4 was released instead. The reason for the cancellation could be the critical reception from SimCity in 2013. The aesthetics and many objects from Olympus were reused in The Sims 4 base game, and a Tudor-styled world that can be seen in some screenshots shows resemblance to The Sims 4: Get Together<nowiki/>'s world Windenburg.

The general art style and many of the objects designed for Olympus were repurposed for The Sims 4 base game. The Tudor-styled world that can be seen in some screenshots is an early version of Windenburg (but spelled Windenbourg in the base game's code) which was eventually completed and released with The Sims 4: Get Together expansion pack.
Olympus' signature feature was that Sims of other players could be identified by a blue Plumbob over their heads. In addition to that, the player would only be able to control one Sim at a time instead of an entire family unlike previous games. There's also a Plumbob statue in The Sims 3: University Life titled "Into the Future" referencing the blue Plumbob and The Sims Olympus project. The blue Plumbob concept was later used in The Sims Mobile to represent other player's Sims.

In Olympus, only one Sim could be controlled at a time instead of an entire household, and Sims of other players would be identified by a blue Plumbob over their heads. A statue of a blue Plumbob appears as an object in The Sims 3: University Life titled "Into the Future" possibly foreshadowing the Olympus project, as well as The Sims 3: Into the Future. Having a blue Plumbob to represent other player's Sims is a concept that is reused in The Sims Mobile.
