Proposed Policy
This policy is still under discussion or undergoing a vote and should NOT be used to guide official decisions or actions. If you wish to participate in the discussion of this policy, see the appropriate entry on the Proposed Policies page.

The Sims Wiki has adopted this Image and File Policy <name can be modified if desired> to apply to all images, videos, audio clips and other files uploaded to The Sims Wiki. This is done to ensure an adherence to local standards and rules, and to ensure that each file uploaded is copyright compliant.

General Rules

  1. Files uploaded to The Sims Wiki may not contain profanity, adult content, or subject matter inappropriate for a general audience. Any violation of this rule will result in file deletion and possible user warnings or blocks.
  2. File names should be written to describe, as best as possible, the subject of the file being uploaded (See file name blacklist below).
  3. Files uploaded must be legal to upload under copyright law and must contain accurate copyright and license information. This requirement is expanded upon under copyright requirements below.
  4. Files uploaded should be relevant to The Sims Wiki or to a personal project on the wiki. Files uploaded for personal projects (such as work on a User Page) should be kept to a minimum and should utilize Public Domain (i.e. non-copyrighted) material as much as possible.
  5. Files uploaded should be used on an appropriate article or page as soon as they are uploaded. Unused files will be subject to deletion.

File name blacklist

In order to avoid generic or non-descriptive file names, the following filenames are prohibited:

  • Files starting with the word 'Screenshot'
  • Files starting with the word 'Image'
  • <more?>

Copyright requirements

All uploaded files to The Sims Wiki must meet the following Copyright Requirements.

Violations of Policy

Violations of this policy can be broken up into two categories - violation of General Rules or violation of Copyright Requirements. Aside from violation of Rule #1, violation of General Rules is a non-serious occurrence unless repeated, especially if repeated after that user is contacted and informed of the policy.

Regarding violation of Copyright Requirements, the following step-by-step process has been established to guide administrators in addressing Copyright Requirement violations.

Step 1: Administrators should contact the user that uploaded non-compliant material and inform them of the Image and file policy, and specifically the Copyright requirements. Administrators should attempt to add the correct copyright information and licensing in order to make the files compliant with the rules, or should delete files which cannot be made compliant.

Step 2: In the case of another violation after initial administrator contact, the violating user should be issued a formal warning and be re-linked to this policy. Administrators may attempt to add the correct copyright information and licensing in order to make the files compliant with the rules, may request that the uploading user makes the necessary additions, or may delete files which cannot be made compliant.

Step 3: In the case of a violation after Step 2, the user may be placed on an Editing Restriction prohibiting the upload of more files, or may be warned or blocked according to the administrator's discretion. Any file uploaded by the user that violates Copyright Requirements should be deleted.

Step 4: In cases where violations continue to occur, escalation of blocks and restrictions should continue at the administrator's discretion. Any file uploaded by the user that violates Copyright Requirements should be deleted.
