Great Start[edit source]

This is a great start but I think there are some other things that need to be considered as well. Now after looking at it, I think that we instead of keeping some categories make use of the ones we make and put the articles in those. For example the category Talent Badges we could put it in the original EP it came from. The Sims Wiki would be the base category with few pages in it. I'll make my comments in italic and my suggestions of categories in bold. On one other suggestions I don't think we should have The Sims: in front of everything, so I changed it.

  • Sims Wiki
    • Templates
    • Community
    • EA Games
      • The Sims
        • Sims (This contains Sims from both games and I really like it so I believe it should just stay in the General Category)
        • Simology (This pertains to both Sims 1 and Sims 2)
        • The Sims 1
          • The Sims: Base Game
          • Livin' Large
          • House Party
          • Hot Date
          • Vacation
          • Unleashed
          • Superstar
          • Makin' Magic
          • Online (I don't know if we have any articles for this category, do we really need it?)
        • The Sims 2
          • The Sims 2: Base Game
          • University
          • Nightlife
          • Open for Business
          • Pets
          • Seasons
          • Bon Voyage
          • Free Time
          • Stuff Packs
        • The Sims Console Games

Just my suggestions. ~ Makiah 17:19, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

Well, what I was thinking is that we don't really need to have a single category tree, since we can put things into multiple categories, so we can have several trees all working together for different categorizations of the same content. Some people might want to browse by game/EP, others might want to browse by areas of a Sim's life; which is why I like Simology, for example.
You'll have to forgive the fact that I'm slightly confuzzled about how best to make things work, it's just that the whole thing isn't entirely clear in my head. Anyway, let me edit the page some and let's see if I can express my ideas a bit more clearly. --Narc (talk) 17:56, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
I'm confused about your multiple category trees. From the Sims Wiki (Mother of all Categories) there should only be one. The reason why I have EA Games listed as a category is because it pertains to the company. We have articles that only can be listed under that like Will Wright. Unless you mean more detailed categories, which I only think we should have unless there will be atleast five articles or something like that... Also do you mean that Simology and Sims will be under the Category The Sims? Or be under Sims Games? I think it would be better instead of Sims Games be The Sims because basically that's what it is. And for The Sims be The Sims 1 because it's the first installment. ~ Makiah 18:55, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
Well, I'm really not sure how to explain the multiple cat trees other than by showing it -- see Revision 2 on the article page. Calling it "The Sims" or "The Sims 1" isn't very important; whichever you prefer is fine. "Simology" and "Sims" don't fit under category "The Sims" or "Sims Games" -- they're outside of the games mini-tree, being their own trees, representing different ways of looking at the same data.
For example, the page on "Aspirations" will fall under categories "The Sims 2 Base Game" (because that's where it first appeared), and "Aspirations" inside "Simology" (because that's the part of Simology it applies to). The page on "Bob Newbie" falls somewhere in the "Sims" category tree (because he's a famous Sim), as well as the "The Sims 1" category tree (because that's the game he appeared in). I hope this explains a little better. --Narc (talk) 19:04, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
Also (I just thought of this) -- does the company really need its own category? An article like Will Wright could fall under a "People" category, rooted also at the "Sims Wiki" super-cat.
And I'm wondering, why have only one sub-category from "Sims Wiki"? Is that a limitation of the software? --Narc (talk) 19:09, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
If you look under the Sims Wiki category now you will notice there are 3 subcategories now. So no that isn't a limitation of the software. EA Games is actually a current category that contains 3 articles and could have a possibility of more if every article was categorized. The reason why it wouldn't be best to have a People category is because how many people could we put in it? And wouldn't they all be directly related to EA Games, if they were creators and such? Also I suggested a Community category under the Sims Wiki to include pages that talk about the community such as Pay Sites and Drofdell. As well as a category for all Templates, that would include things like the stub template as well as the blank so we know they are there to be under the grand category Sims Wiki. Templates is also a category that already exists. ~ Makiah 19:28, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
Right, well, then, that's my proposition. The "Community" super-cat is good, so is "Templates". We'll have "EA Games" instead of "Sims Games", and then the several people we care about can be categorized there. It sounds like we're on the same page, I think. If you've got any more super-cats (categories that go under Sims Wiki, the mother cat), post 'em here, and I'll put them in revision 3 on the article page. --Narc (talk) 20:28, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

Category:Buy Mode? Category:Build Mode?[edit source]

I'm wondering, do we want something like Category:Buy Mode for particularly interesting Buy mode items like the Robot Crafting Station & friends? --Narc (talk) 20:03, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

I'm neutral about it. I think that it would be a great place to put objects but I don't think we have alot of objects. Maybe making them as we go? Like yeah that item is great for the Buy Mode category but I don't know any articles that would fit in build mode...unless we aren't just solely thinking about items...maybe like the Starter house. It deals with Build Mode I guess you could say... ~ Makiah 16:35, 14 March 2008 (UTC)
Honestly, I'm not sure what we could do with a build mode category. The starter house is more about lots and such than about build mode itself. We can make a category for buy mode as we make more articles to fit in it. That honestly makes me wonder if we shouldn't include something in the policy about a minimum number of articles to create a category, but that could end up pretty messy. What do you think? --Narc (talk) 23:10, 14 March 2008 (UTC)
I tend to support categories that are going to hold a good number of articles in them. However I'm sure that if we truly fix the category system this problem will fix itself as items will appear in the wanted categories. If we have fixed it nothing should appear there! ^_^ So I don't believe it's needed to add it to the policy. That's my thought at least. Makiah 06:55, 15 March 2008 (UTC)
That meshes well with my thinking. Agreed! :-) --Narc (talk) 12:46, 15 March 2008 (UTC)
