Computers are objects in The Sims, The Sims 2 and The Sims 3.

Starting with The Sims, a computer could be used for:

  • Finding a job (The Sims, The Sims 2, and The Sims 3)
In The Sims, the computer will list three job openings each day.
In The Sims 2 and The Sims 3, the computer lists five job openings each day, and jobs found on the computer are often better than the ones in the newspaper.
  • Playing games

Computers were made more versatile in The Sims 2. They could be used for:

  • Moving one or more family members into the Family Bin so they can get their own place.
  • Chatting online and emailing

When the "Chat with..." menu shows which Sims are online, only their first names are shown. Since The Sims 2 tends to reuse names, it's not always possible to be certain which Sim is being selected.

In The Sims 3, computers were once again upgraded. In addition to being having all the previous features, save for the ones from the University, Open for Business, and FreeTime expansions and the ability to order groceries, computers could be used for:

  • Playing Chess. As well as having newer, flashier games, all but the cheapest computer model includes a Logic-building chess program.
  • Solving the Unsolvable. Genius Sims can attempt to solve complex scientific problems, which will earn them money if successful. Attempts to solve problems can't be interrupted; if the Sim stops the attempt before it's completed, it will automatically fail and they'll have to start over.
  • Hacking. Sims who are Computer Whizzes can earn money this way at night.
  • Upgrading. Sims with the Handiness skill can attempt to upgrade a computer.
    • Unbreakable. This upgrade will prevent a computer from ever breaking.
    • Improved Graphics. This upgrade increases the fun Sims get from playing games on the computer.
    • Overclocking. Sims who are Computer Whizzes can try to overclock a computer, which randomly makes it Unbreakable or gives it Improved Graphics, even if the Sim doesn't have the handiness required for the upgrade. Overclocking can only be attempted once per computer and has a chance of breaking the computer.
  • Trolling Forums. Inappropriate, Mean-Spirited, or just downright Evil Sims can try to get big lulz from touchy netizens. After trolling on a forum, a Sim can start Checking For Responses. With luck, their posts will be noticed and give them a 'Fiendish Delight' moodlet, though sometimes their posts expire without any response, leaving them bitter for an entire day.
