In The Sims, cribs are not available for purchase in Buy mode. Whenever a baby is born, it will automatically appear with — and inside — its crib.
The crib and baby are essentially a single object. As long as the baby is in the crib, the crib can be moved in Buy mode or Build mode. However, if the baby is outside of the crib, the crib is considered to be "in use", and cannot be moved.
The baby is not considered to be a member of the household until it grows into a child. If cared for correctly, the baby will become a child after 72 hours and the crib will disappear.
The Sims 2
In The Sims 2, cribs must be purchased from the Misc. -> Children section of Buy mode; they are not provided when a baby is born or adopted. The base game includes The Kinder Kontainer, which costs §275. The Sims 2: FreeTime adds two wooden cribs, the Wonderland Sleigh Crib and the Lil' Jailbird Canopy Crib, which cost §300 and §325, respectively. All cribs in The Sims 2 have an Energy rating of 12.
A crib holds only one baby or toddler at a time. Babies cannot leave the crib without the assistance of a teen or older Sim. This is generally true for toddlers, but toddlers who have learned to walk may sometimes escape from their crib if left unattended.
Notes
Maxis did not include animations for the FreeTime cribs, so Sims will not lower or raise the side when reaching into them. Default replacements which are animated are available from Mod The Sims.
The FreeTime cribs do not allow the frame color and bedding color to be selected separately, and do not use the bedding textures for the base game crib. Versions of the FreeTime cribs which address this, and which are animated, are available from The Sims Resource and Mod The Sims.
The Kinder Kontainer
The Kinder Kontainer
The Kinder Kontainer may not look like much, but it definitely does NOT look like a security fence. Instead, its designers would have it viewed as a blank canvas where the impressionable and eager mind of your child can expand without being inundated with the stereotypical images and ideals of "corporate childhood." This cubicle features solid steel crossbeams and triple welds for ensured security and stability, yet its plush cushioning is the ideal landing spot for post-lunch naps.
For the baby who prefers snow to the sand, this crib is wonderland. Research shows that infants who slumber in the graceful curves of this sleigh crib are 79% more likely to grow up to be championship dogsled racers, igloo property owners, or penguin tamers.
This soft yet secure crib is constructed from wholesome bedding, woven from only the softest angel hair cotton, surrounded by railings sturdy and high enough to contain even the most clever escape artists, and topped with a cozy canopy to keep your tiny convict snug as a bug in a rug.
Cribs can be purchased from the Kids -> Furniture section of Buy mode. Sets from The Sims 3 Store may have cribs which are made to match the set's theme.
As in The Sims 2, cribs can only hold a single baby or toddler at a time. Babies and toddlers cannot leave the crib without the assistance of a teen or older Sim.
If a toddler has a stuffed animal or imaginary friend[TS3:G] toy in their inventory, it may sit in the crib with them.

Voted "Most Stylish Crib" by New & Insufferable Parents Weekly, the Rock-a-Baby Crib is the must-have tot cot of the season. With its tulip-free frame and flamingo down mattress, the Rock-a-Baby is everything babies need to look their sleppy-chic best.
Downy soft paddling lulls your infants into restful sleep, winning parents precious moments of peace and quiet. Transparent walls keep children secure without the psychologically damaging structure of bars.
Cribs in The Sims 4 are replaced by bassinets (for babies) and toddler beds (for toddlers). Like The Sims, a bassinet is tied to a particular baby until that baby ages up. However, it will not disappear when its current occupant ages up but it can be sold for §150 or be used by babies who are born later in the household.
A bassinet is provided automatically free-of-charge if the player decides that the pregnant Sim give birth at the hospital. Otherwise, if the player wishes to have the birth take place at home, a bassinet will need to be purchased before the birth can continue. In either case, the player can change the bassinet's color at any time.
