Biography

Irene was abandoned by her parents near a church. Her parents wrote her name ‘Irene’ on a piece of paper and attach around her ankle. An hour in a half later a young nun named Mary Perc find the newborn at the church doorstep.

Mary Perc took Irene to Lamia city, located in Phthiotis, Greece, when she was just 20 days old at the time. Patriarch Aristocles Matthew Spyrou( Athenagoras I) baptize and bless Irene. Mary travel back to Thebes with Irene to live her. On March 25,1933, She officially adopted Irene. Mary tried her best to teach her daughter Christian Orthodox and how to be a lady. On June 14, 1936, she becomes a member of the Greek Orthodox Church at the of age 3. She went to Elementary Aegean Center for the Fine Arts then later went to Aegean Center for the Fine Arts College.

On August 10,1954, Irene self employed as an artist at the age 21. Somewhere during this time her adoptive mother Mary Perc had a secret relationship with Aristocles Matthew Spyrou who impregnated her and later on died giving birth to her sister Than Perc. Irene raised her but she didn’t claim her as her own.

Her first appearance in chapter__ featured in one of Damian Izan’s flashbacks who is her grandson. Her official first appearance is in chapter__  when Cynthia and Damian visit her for a few days. She asks Damian to take a picture of her near The Fallen Wall of Thebes. She appear in another flashback in chapter___ with her husband. She died of a fire along with her husband on March 28, 2017, they both was 84 years old.

Personality /Relationship

Irene is avery care and loving mother. It seems she is very strict and cultural probably due to her religious views. She want to pass down Greek traditions and her religion. Even if her children don’t follow certain Greek traditions she still care for them but may get upset.

Mary Perc:Irene loved Mary dearly and look up to her as her mother. Irene have featured her in many of her paintings along with her adoptive sister and Patriarch Aristocles Matthew Spyrou.

“Oh my dear Mary Nun...She is an angel that came from Heaven above! I never had anyone like her treat me so nicely. She has claimed me as her own... I will also be daughter and she’ll always be my mother.”

~ Mary talking about Mary Perc to Damian.

Than Perc: Than sees Irene as her sister and as a motherly figure. The two shared a close bond. Irene often tell stories of their mother.

“I’m happy for you Than...You’re going for your third degree and is making something of yourself. I guess I won't be seeing you for a while again...May Jesus bless you.”

~ Irene telling her sister goodbye.

Theodora:

They have a strong bond and friendship. Theodora is often seen talking on the phone with her about the church’s latest news or scandals and about her grandchildren. They both have a strained relationship with Cynthia probably because she doesn’t follow a lot of Greek traditions.

Damian Izan: Irene love her grandchildren to death despite them not following some Greek traditions. Her favorite is Damian. They both shared a strong bond together. Thought the story, Damian can be seen writing letters to her since she lived far away from them. The two are seen talking about Greek culture. Whenever he is concern about the family he share it with her and she comforts him. She usually tell him that his problems will resolve soon. When She died Damian was devastated.

Theodore Calliope: The two been married for 59 years. They often are seen talk to each other with humor. Irene often called him “Thor” and he called her “Sweet Daisy.” They do argue about the family traditions and the future of the family which make their relation a bit strained. They also have a few relationship problems. After an argument they’ll stop talking for days.

In chapter__ when Damian visit them, it was obvious they had a recent argument. When Damian asked Theodore what happen he said “I wish I stayed back in Lamia than live here.” When he asked her what happen she said “Oh it’s just us arguing again...Don’t worry about it dear.” It’s unknown if they have resolved their relationship problems before they died. However, according to one of the fireman that put out the fire, he was trying to save Theodore but Theodore was trying to save his wife and they both died.

Cynthia: Irene and Cynthia’s relationship was not initially an amicable one. As a child she was quite rebellious toward her parents. When she got older she grown a much stronger bond with her father than she had with her mother. Irene described Cynthia as “The child that you love so much but is damned to hell.” Irene stated despite her not following Greek traditions she still love her daughter and worried about her dearly.  Also Cynthia named one of her twin daughters after her in honour of her. She have also stated that she is proud to raise a independent woman. It seems that the two have an “off-and-on relationship” with each other.

“I’m going to live my own life and do the things I love...Yeah I follow a few of the traditions and became a member at that church. I even married a Greek! Mama..I know you want your legacy to continue but I got to live my life and I’m doing it with or without you. But..don’t forget that I still love you.”

~ Cynthia arguing with Irene.

The Calliope Twins: Greta and Irene II Calliope honour their grandmother dearly and learn many Greek traditions from her. They honour their last name especially and have stated “We’ll do anything from changing their last name.” The twins are always happy to see her and are grateful of the gifts she send them.

Other Grandchildren: Despite not having a personal bond with some of her grandchildren she still loved them dearly. Her husband and her does send them gifts on Greek holidays and on their birthdays If she sense something is wrong she usually contact her children about it.

Candela Izan: Irene cherish Candela dearly and prays she have a successful life. She often worried about her future and think she might be going down a dark path. This is probably  because she part of the Goth family and Rhea does not have a good relationship with her family. Irene usually sing her to sleep and tell her Greek mythology stories over the phone at night.
