I've been planning on rolling this out here for a little while but I've been busy lately. Seeing as it's the bank holiday weekend and I've mostly got this working, I'll see what everybody thinks.

As some of you may know, we have a page for IRC quotes. In its current form the page is quite lengthy and seldom used. To put it bluntly, maybe a singular page on a wiki isn't the best place to store quotes.

With that in mind, I'm enquiring as into whether or not the community would like a more formalised quotes database (QDB) for #wikia-sims. I've got a test version parked if you want to take a look and I'm running a more established QDB setup for Uncyclopedia (NSFW, don't look if you're thin-skinned) too if you want a more in-depth analysis.

The benefit to this being that quotes aren't bound to a single page, there's upvotes and downvotes, statistics too once it's built up a bit and it's a lot more organised. You can even move the old quotes over one-by-one if you really wanted to. Plus having a QDB may reinvigorate IRC a bit, who knows?

I should note that while anybody can submit new quotes, they have to be approved by an admin (I'll need to set people up on the site for that). This is, obviously, to prevent abuse; plus the Uncyclopedia QDB has a spambot lurking about so there's that. In fact here's the user rights hierarchy:

  • Owner - can approve/remove quotes, news listings, view the event log and create/manage permissions of/remove accounts. I'm keeping this permission for myself and bureaucrats as there's IP address and user agent data involved here.
  • Administrator - same as above minus account management and the event log. Admins would be getting this one.
  • Moderator - can approve/discard new quotes but can't remove already existing quotes or manage news listings. I was thinking of giving this to IRC chanops (non-admins), or I might let them have the full admin right - I haven't decided yet.

This doesn't really need an in-depth discussion, you could probably wrap this up fairly quickly. But it's a big change to the current system so obviously it'll need approval/disapproval from the community.

If any of the admins want to be set up on QDB while this is being discussed, PM me on IRC and I'll get to you as soon as I'm free (busy optimising traffic in Cities: Skylines and I've got to run to Tesco a bit later).

So does everybody want this? Lost Labyrinth (c)(b) 12:45, August 30, 2015 (UTC)

P.S Yes I know there's a talk page somewhere that this is probably better suited to. But if I put it there, I doubt anybody will read it, so I'm sticking it here.

Discussion[edit source]

Normally I would support this, but how many people really look at our quotes page? Or better yet, how often is it updated? Reasons I would support this is that it'll be easier to add quotes that contain profanity, which is blocked by an edit filter on this wiki. Reasons I would oppose is, well, do we get much out of this? --I am k6ka Talk to me! See what I have done 00:07, September 1, 2015 (UTC)

Dead thread - Since there is no consensus here one way or the other, and only one participant in the discussion, the thread author should feel free to carry on in whatever way they deem appropriate, until or unless a new discussion occurs to define community consensus in this case. -- LiR talkblogcontribs 14:30, March 11, 2016 (UTC)
