Forum:Time to retire the Newsletter?
Alright, the Newsletter hasn't been updated since October. I don't blame anyone for this, since putting a newsletter together is a major operation. But seeing as we've launched our weekly news blogs, I kinda don't see the point in continuing with the Newsletter, at least not in the same format it has been in the past. My reasons for this thought are thus:
- We're having a very hard time keeping the editor position filled. Without a dedicated editor, the newsletter can't get off the ground each month.
- We already cover most, if not all, of the newsletter content in weekly news blogs.
- The 'comedic' aspects of the newsletter, while a nice touch, are not necessary and are difficult to write (or to get others to write).
I for one am pleased with the weekly news system, so I think we should bid a fond farewell to the Newsletter system. Thoughts? Opinions? Queries? -- LiR speak ~ read 23:47, January 3, 2013 (UTC)

I would have definitely loved the Fanon Review section that was manned by Bakerychaz. But if the Newsletter is to go away (I for one stay neutral), I suppose it's not wrong for someone else to carry the torch. I've thought for a little while that the Newsletter was sorely lacking in actual news and that appears to have been rectified by the weekly news blogs. I'm all for retiring them though it may be worth keeping the Fanon Reviews in one form or another. Lost Labyrinth .svg){kind=small}

- We could incorporate Fanon Reviews (and other features) into the weekly blogs somehow. Maybe have it like a rotating feature, where every 'x' number of weeks we have a new Review. We could also include the game reviews, horoscopes, and other features of the Newsletter in a rotation plan as well. -- LiR speak ~ read 00:04, January 4, 2013 (UTC)

- At this point I'd suggest carefully discussing what we do and don't want to keep from what's already in the Newsletter. I don't see the need for horoscopes and "comedy" to be incorporated into news blogs at all while game reviews can be dropped too as anyone could write one of those into an opinion blog. I'm okay with keeping Fanon Reviews, as already stated, on maybe a bi-weekly basis and for me that is all I want to keep, purely because I don't see the point of keeping everything if the proposal is all about eliminating this feature. - The point of eliminating the monthly newsletter, at least as far as I am concerned seeing as I proposed this, is simply to reduce the workload involved in putting out Wiki news. The newsletter is a huge project that comes up once a month, whereas it would be much more manageable to keep the newsletter features alive if they didn't all have to be written at the same time. I'm all in favor of discussing whether features stay or go, but I want it clear that my intent wasn't to eliminate those features necessarily, but to simply get rid of what seems to me to be an unnecessary and arduous project. -- LiR speak ~ read 00:53, January 4, 2013 (UTC)
- As I am technically the current editor of the newsletter, I think I probably should say some stuff here. Firstly, I'd like to have been able to do a better job in regards to publishing it but it is incredibly difficult finding people willing to write something, and even more difficult to actually get it from them. I understand this as everyone has other things to do. The last issue of the newsletter in October was written almost in entirety by myself, and I don't have that sort of time on a regular basis. As well as this, the newsletter is somewhat redundant now we have the weekly news blogs, making it unneeded. I like what was said above about trying to incorporate the features of the newsletter into the news blogs as well.
