Martin Ruben is a freshman who attends Sim State University. He lives in the Bright Household with roommates Allegra Gorey and Jane Stacks. He is in the Mathematics major. Martin's twin brother, Joshua, also attends Sim State. The brothers have a 20/20 relationship with one another, so while they are not hostile or even estranged, they are not close, either.

He is the nerd on campus, while his brother is a popular jock who is in a prestigious fraternity. Surprisingly, though, he is also friends with the most popular girl on the campus, sorority girl Heather Huffington, who has a crush on him. Even though Martin is in his first semester of the Freshman year, his average is 0, which is impossible because he hasn't gone through his final exam. Normally, the GPA for a first-semester Freshmen is blank. This happens with his roommate Allegra as well.

Martin has a kind but rather introverted personality, tending to be shy, lazy, and neat. Not surprisingly for a nerd, Martin is strongly interested in sci-fi and the paranormal. His other main interests are politics, weather, and work. He is not very interested in money, sports, or fashion. Like Castor Nova, Martin does not have a pre-set Lifetime want. Like several other Sims from Sim State University, he starts off with no gender preference.

While it is unexplained whether he or his twin brother is the older one, Martin is 45 hours away from the final exam in his first semester, when the Bright household is first played. Joshua is 49 hours from the final exam in his first semester, which could indicate that Martin is the older twin. However it may just mean that Martin is better educated, as he is more focused than Joshua. Their NIDs indicate that Joshua was the first twin to be created.

He and Mickey Dosser have very similar facial features at the start of the game. However they will look quite different from each other when they become elders, even though they both use the 25th face in Create a Sim. For other life stages Martin's face is linked to the 26th template while Mickey's is linked to the 2nd template. When editing in SimPE, Martin's zodiac sign is not recognized.
