Publishing

Most writing and publishing undertakings can be done via computer.

Publishing is the act of producing a product of writing to make simoleons. A few different things can be published, such as articles and blog posts, but the most common are novels. Sims with higher writing skill often experience more monetary success with publishing (or, in the case of blogging, the social networking skill).

The Sims 2[edit | edit source]

Publishing in The Sims 2 is a very straightforward process. A sim must simply select "Write Novel" from a computer and they will begin to work on a novel. They will gain creative skill while doing this. After some time writing the novel, a notification will appear summarizing the success of the novel and how many simoleons were earned.

Writing a novel is a good option for increasing creative skill if an easel is not on the lot, especially if a sim must increase the skill for their university degree.

The Sims 3[edit | edit source]

There is much more hand-holding through the publishing process in The Sims 3 than in the previous game. A sim can elect to write on a computer, and any option under "Write" except "Practice Writing" will start a book. The writing skill tab can give insight on the most profitable genre the sim can write. As they gain writing skill, more genres are unlocked, but at level one they begin with Fiction or Nonfiction as their two options. These are also two of the shortest genres in length.

As a sim writes their book, they will occasionally receive small pay from the publisher for submitting pieces of their work. Once they finish the book, a notification appears with the stats of the book, including its popularity. If the book is a hit or best seller, the sim will receive higher royalties. If the book is okay, they will receive standard royalties. If the book is a flop, it will receive lower royalties.

After publishing the book, the sim will begin to receive royalties. A free copy of the book will be mailed to the household, and more copies can be purchased from the computer at any time. The sim's book may also appear in the town library.

In addition to books, sims can publish blog posts in The Sims 3: University Life. The blog can be set up and accessed from the sim's cell phone, and the player can type whatever they want as a post and submit. After each post, a notification will report the post's popularity, as well as the amount of blog followers gained or lost. Occasionally, sims may donate simoleons to the blog, and the likelihood of this can be increased by asking for donations on the blog. Posting on the blog does not post in real life on the player wall.

The Sims 4[edit | edit source]

The writing process in The Sims 4 is similar to that of the previous game. A sim must select "Write" on the computer and then choose which genre they want to write. At level one, the only option is Children's Book. As the writing skill increases, more genres are unlocked, as well as genres that can be written with certain emotions.

Once a sim finishes a book, they can choose whether or not to publish; it does not happen automatically. To publish, select the mailbox and then publishing method. The only option at level one is to Self-Publish, which earns a small amount of royalties. As more methods unlock, royalties increase. A copy of the book is placed in the author's inventory upon finishing.

Along with books, articles can be written and submitted in the Style Influencer career. This is often a daily task.
