- His name could be a spoof of the titular character from the 2008 Pixar film WALL-E.
- It could also be a reference to Robby the Robot from the 1956 film Forbidden Planet.
- ROB-E's head also bears some resemblance to the optical sensors of Metal Gear Mk. II from Konami's Snatcher and Metal Gear Solid 4.
- He may be a reference to R.O.B. (Robotic Operating Buddy) for the Japanese NES system.
