TheSims2.com is the official site for The Sims 2 games and expansions. Game patches are available there, and it offers free downloads of custom content including lots, neighborhoods, items, and Sims. Other features includes: Community Chat, Community Boards (BBS), PodCasts, The Sims 2 Store, LOLSims (a parody of LOLCats)[1] and information about upcoming events (or game releases). TheSims2.com is monitored by Maxoids. All downloads come packaged with the SecuROM rootkit[confirmation needed].
On February 1, 2011, EA announced that The Sims 2 Store will close as of March 31, 2011 and therefore, support of The Sims 2 Store Edition has ended.
The Sims 2 Website still supports username logons but ea.com does not.
On July 20, 2011, there was a link for The Sims 2 on The Sims 3 Website, but that link has been replaced by The Sims Social. MySims has also been replaced by The Sims Medieval and SimAnimals with The Sims 3 (console) (Later The Sims 3 Pets).
As of July 17, 2011, attempts to visit TheSims2.com resulted in a screen with color bars and a message saying that the site was closed for maintenance but as of August, an error page similar to The Sims 3 website appeared. Attempts to visit sub-sections such as the BBS or the Exchange failed. It appears that game patches can be downloaded from SimPrograms. Furthermore, "You are not authorized to view this page" will appear if the user tries to access the UK website, this error is similar to IE6. Other sites such as The Urbz: Sims in the City website also cause this error. This has caused people to believe that EA has shut down all outdated sites.
Thesims.com has removed The Sims 2 website from the list leaving only The Sims 3 and The Sims Medieval in the list.
EA has announced that TheSims2.com will be shut down on January 14, 2013.
