Information in new file template[edit source]

I think the goal should be to make it look abit more like it does on wikipedia/wikimedia commons. Not layout, but the information available.

  • Original author
  • Source (link)
  • Date it was taken, created if applicable

Licensing[edit source]

In the case of anything The Sims, we should differenciate between licensing and author requests. Authors can request that you don't upload other places or that you must link to their page, but ultimately EA holds the copyright. I'm not 100% sure how we best accomplish that. One way would be to just use the appropiate Fair Use licensing tag and then have another tag below it called 'author requests', have it lists the requests and state that it's not an actual license. We could set them apart by lineskips, different colors and such. Duskey(talk) 19:45, July 18, 2010 (UTC)

Categories[edit source]

At the moment our MediaWiki:Community-corner says users should add all images to Images though this conflicts with the description in the category itself: Please place images in subcategories only. Images should be in at least two subcategories, one by license (using a license template) and one by content. In my opinion the images category should only be used for "I don't know where else to put it images" which can then be sorted later. What are your thoughts? Duskey(talk) 16:26, July 20, 2010 (UTC)

Include categories in license dropdown[edit source]

A kind user pointed me to The Doom Wiki where you can see they have an expanded license dropdown, which puts the images in categories too. I think we should adopt that. Here's their MediaWiki:Licenses. Duskey(talk) 19:12, August 19, 2010 (UTC)

Screenshots categories[edit source]

Personally I don't quite like how screenshots from the game are handled. In my opinion there's a huge difference between promotional shots released before the game is released and screenshots submitted by users after release. I suggest we make a promotional images category for each game, where needed of course, (eg. Category:Promotional images/Fast Lane Stuff), maybe Category:Renders/Fast Lane Stuff) as well. That just leaves screencaps from videos. Screenshots from the game would still be in 'Sims 3 snapshots' for example.

Be sure to check out Help:Categorizing images. Duskey(talk) 11:11, August 26, 2010 (UTC)

Tags[edit source]

I've often thought about how we can improve the way users find images on The Sims Wiki. The 'add picture' button only searches filenames. Renaming filenames to include all possible keywords is too big a hassle and will leave of with many redirects, which is bad all around. Current image categories are also quite limited. Many images only fit one category: 'sims 3 snapshots' as an example. I was thinking of making tags similar to flikr, photobucket and many other image sites. I contacted Wikia for the possibility of adding new stuff to the default layout of file pages, but that is not possible. My solution is then to add a bunch of new categories prefixed with Tag. Category:Tag:Party for example. All the tags would be sorted in a Images -> Tags category.

As an example, a sims 3 snapshot of a party where two sims are fighting, one of them a ghost, the tags could be: sims 3, party, ghost, fighting. People will then be able to browse the tag categories for similar images of just "search" for pictures of sims fighting if they need one.

Implementing this would require us to create a master tag category: 'Category:Tags' and several categories for each tag, but once it has been set up, it will greatly improve the way you can find images here.

What are your thoughts on this? Duskey(talk) 20:25, July 24, 2010 (UTC)

A dream scenario would be to have this in place before FLS comes out. Duskey(talk) 02:50, July 30, 2010 (UTC)

Tags as shown on image pages[edit source]

I think I had a minor epiphany about tags. What if we set all tag categories as hidden, then they wouldn't show in the categories field (unless you enable it in your settings) and add a template to the bottom of all images, which lists all categories, pre-fixed with Tag? This is technically doable with DPL, but I've been advised against it since it'll put a lot of strain on the server. Duskey(talk) 19:15, August 19, 2010 (UTC)
