When creating a new Sim in The Sims and The Sims 2, the Sim will be given the Zodiac sign that's closest to the personality that was chosen. As the player assigns and reassigns personality points, the display will change to show which sign the Sim will have with that mix of points.

The sim will be able to learn new traits or become closer to another zodiac sign in personality but still maintain its original signs, such as Tara DeBateau having the Leo sign but her personality is exactly the same to that of a pre-created gemini. The justification is that these traits are learnt and passed genetically from parents to children, but in this case Tara is an adopted child. This happens with pretty much all sims in Belladonna Cove, where their signs are different from its original, such as Jessica Peterson being a libra sign and having the personality traits of a Create a Sim leo. This might be a developer oversight, since all pre-created signs in this neighborhood will always have a personality that pertains to a sign that is two "houses" behind it, Such as Tara's leo being derived from gemini personality points (8 points in active, and 7 points in outgoing while the original leo would originally be 4 points and 10 points respectivelly in these areas), while Jessica Peterson's libra sign having a leo personality point (10 outgoing while an original Create a Sim libra would have 8 outgoing points), counting two houses for each sign with a personality from a sign two grades behind it. This also happens with Justin Cleveland that is a taurus in sign but has a personality of a pisces, and his father being a capricorn but having the personality of a scorpio.

In The Sims 2, players also have the opportunity to select a sign from the Zodiac, and use the preset traits for that sign as a starting point. Personality traits affect not only the things Sims prefer to do, but also their relationships. In The Sims 3 this was replaced by a Traits system.

TRIVIA: Supposedly if a sign has other personality than it's original one, it will be recognized by the game as the closest sign in particular, and this will work for the chemistry table below. This has been recognized mostly in newer patches and using "boolprop testingcheatsenabled true" in the base game while changing the personality on the fly will cause the sign to change accordingly to personality, even if removing or increasing some or all trait points. Suppose an Aries has the personality closest to an aquarius, then it will be recognized as an aquarius. In the case of very distinguished personalities such as Kevin_Beare leo sign and 4 points in the outgoing trait, he will be closely recognized by another sign in the game, and the closest thing to count in the aid of chemistry between sims will be their aspirations.

Zodiac compatibility wheel

Sims will generally get on well with other Sims who have the same sign, because they are attracted to others with similar personalities. However, personality and zodiac are separate contributors to chemistry, because Sims will keep the same sign even if their personality points are altered. "Attracted to" and "disgusted by" are not absolutes, but modifiers that help or hinder the growth of a relationship. Sims with incompatible signs can become good friends, and even lovers, if they have enough else in common. However, it'll take longer, and they'll have to work at it harder. Likewise, Sims with compatible signs but little else in common will have trouble building a relationship, and may even end up becoming enemies.

Zodiac Sign Descriptions for The Sims and The Sims 2

Aries	Dynamic and confident, most Aries never shy away from the opportunity to strike up a conversation with anyone. However, they can be somewhat impulsive and quick-tempered.
Taurus	The typical Taurus is strong-willed and determined. That can often mean determined to have a good time.
Gemini	Youthful and lively, many think Gemini have enough energy for two. Also energized by conversation, it isn't surprising to find them bouncing from one topic to the next at parties.
Cancer	There is nothing extreme about Cancers--they are very balanced. They can also be very changeable which can be good or bad depending on the situation.
Leo	The ultimate "people" people, Leos are complete extroverts. Unfortunately, this makes them deficient in other areas.
Virgo	Modest and shy, introverted Virgos take pride in their meticulous and practical approach to life. Unfortunately, these same traits can result in a very fussy individual.
Libra	Romantic and charming and incredibly sociable, it's hard not to like a Libra. However, their social pursuits leave them little time for more practical endeavors.
Scorpio	While somewhat withdrawn from social activities, Scorpios are forceful and determined in more practical pursuits.
Sagittarius	Jovial and carefree, Sagittarians are also blessed with boundless energy. Unfortunately, this combination can make them restless and careless.
Capricorn	Armed with a dry wit, Capricorns can often be found telling a good joke. Also being very practical, they strive for order and discipline.
Aquarius	Friendly and amusing, Aquarians are excellent companions. Being well balanced in other areas helps to make them the most agreeable sign.
Pisces	Selfless and kind, Pisces are one of the nicest signs. They're active too. However, this combination can make them emotionally restless and indecisive.

Late Night

Zodiac signs have returned in The Sims 3: Late Night and in Patch 17. They have no effect on personality or lifestyle, but they do make it easier to have contact with people of certain Zodiac Signs. For example, a Pisces will be attracted to a Scorpio, Cancer, Capricorn and Taurus.[1]

You can discover other people's signs by asking them in the romantic interactions section: "Ask sign". Also note that one of the options a Vampire has when reading a Sim's mind is that Sim's Sign. Sims may be repulsed by the Sim because they don't have compatible signs or the Sims may get along well because they have discovered that their signs are compatible. Zodiac signs are randomly chosen for sims who were made before Late Night.
