Derek Hale is the son of James Hale and Victoria Hale. He has one brother named Edward Hale. When he was a child, his parents were both electrocuted and died. He was left in the care of his Aunt Jane, who moved into the Hale house to take care of both children. Derek was able to discover the fact his aunt was a werewolf and was jealous of her strength and beauty. This was intensified when both of his children were born werewolves as well. Despite loving his aunt immensely, he was always very jealous of her.
Derek married Laura Harris when he was an adult, after a while of searching for a partner. Laura explained that her mother was a fairy and that it could reappear in their children. However, it did not. Shortly after his children grew into young adults, both Derek and Laura died in a fire that occurred in their home. The cause of the fire is unknown.
