Royce has always lived with his father Jamison Vale in Flaxen County.

Royce is trying to stay normal after an accident left him and his girlfriend Bry Alder scarred for life. He is very close friends with Jonathon Blake , another of the five students injured during the fire . Royce is a southern gentleman with light hair and skin. Royce seems to have minimal scarring from the burns, but most of his chest and back is brutally damaged. He is the same age as the others, who are all repeating the final semester of their senior year that should have ended two years ago. Since his first encounter with the ghosts haunting his neighbor's house, he has become very anxious and will not willfully discuss ghosts or any other unnatural phenomenon.

He isn't very close with his father, who is a struggling news reporter and works in Bridgeport, almost three hours away. His closest friend is Jon Blake, and he is struggling to commit to Bry, though she believes he has overcome his commitment issues.

Royce is smart and got a full scholarship to La Fiesta Tech, and up-and-coming university of, primarily, science, which is odd because he is not a genious and wants to become a CEO.
