As hinted at the end of this forum, I'm looking to prepare The Sims Wiki for a theme that's reminiscent of The Sims 4. To start off with, I'd like to propose that we adopt a new logo of which I have created myself.

I feel that our current logo has served us well for the past few years and I'm thinking that maybe it is time for a change, as a new coat of paint doesn't hurt. I thank Erry for the time and effort he has put into our logo.

I'd like to note a few things about my proposed logo:

  • The imgur image is indeed of a higher resolution than it would be if we adopted it. I did that deliberately so it's easier to work with and guaranteed to produce an optimal outcome.
  • While the high-res version contains some jaggies, they're less pronounced when scaled to a lower resolution (see here).
  • I've deliberately gone for a basic, TS4-esque design on the logo. Less is more.
  • I'm willing to provide, on request, the GIMP project file (.xcf) for the logo should somebody want to adapt it for whatever purpose.

I haven't made a fanon namespace-specific logo because not only have I not got around to it but I also don't think we really need one. That logo reads "The Sims Fanon Wiki" yet that's a separate entity and could honestly be confusing for new users. We're still The Sims Wiki regardless of whether we host fanon or not and that's not changing anytime soon. Of course if there is consensus to keep the fanon logo then we can cross that bridge later.

I know we sometimes do theme-based stuff without community input but I've chosen to go this route so I can hopefully get a wide range of opinions on this (hopefully!). Though I did show an in-progress version of the exact same logo to some of the IRC users a little while back to a favourable response.

So what's everybody's thoughts? Lost Labyrinth (c)(b) 14:40, January 12, 2014 (UTC)

Discussion[edit source]

Lab, this looks great. Like, really great. There are, however, a few things that while barely noticeable on the low-res version, made my not-OCD tingle a bit after looking at the high resolution version:

  • The tip of the 2nd S in "Sims" isn't parallel to the indentation in the W;
  • The edges on the wording on the "Wiki" part are a bit too soft, IMO.

Nevertheless, let me emphasize that it is still a great logo and, putting those issues aside, it is an ideal choice for the near future. DanPintalkcontribs14:46, January 12, 2014 (UTC)

I've tried to fix the non-parallel lines but there's not a whole lot I can do without throwing everything out. The soft edges are likely a result of either the way the word was created or the anti-aliasing solution used by GIMP. Lost Labyrinth (c)(b) 15:20, January 12, 2014 (UTC)

I did notice the softness on 'Wiki' as well but at low resolution it's not an issue. What occurs to me, though, is that we sometimes do use the logo on pages, like "official" pages, blogs, etc. in which case it might be a little more noticeable, but still not terribly so.

I was considering suggesting a logo design contest to update the logo, rather than simply choosing one design. It has been done in the past (that's how Erry got to design our logo in the first place) and it seemed like a good thing to do again. But, I'm ultimately going to support adopting this logo outright, for a couple reasons. First, it's a well-done logo, and I doubt we can really do much better. Plus, Lab is an active member of the community who is almost always around; if we held a contest and selected someone who is often absent, it might be hard to get them to update the logo for events, holidays, etc. And, it seems preferable to me that our logo should resemble the series logo, so ultimately I would support any logo which held closely to the official logo for the game, which this does.

tl;dr I support adopting this logo. -- LostInRiverview talk ~ blog 00:27, January 13, 2014 (UTC)

I support the adoption of the logo. Some fixes could be applied to the 'Wiki' portion, but other than that, the logo looks fine. Ѧüя◎ґ (talk) 02:30, January 13, 2014 (UTC)
I can't believe a logo can look so great. You have my support. But something I must criticize on is that if you could improve the edging between the second S in 'Sims' and the W in 'Wiki' because it looks quite wonky. Joey.eyeball (talk) 03:18, January 13, 2014 (UTC)

The wonkiness was kind of deliberate as I tried to mimic the design of TS4's logo. It hasn't come out as neat as anyone probably would have hoped but it's not easy to get an accurate recreation. And merely flipping the "M" upside down then changing the gradient just looked odd imo. Lost Labyrinth (c)(b) 14:29, January 13, 2014 (UTC)

Overall, I like the logo Lab proposed, and I think it'll suit well. If there's anything we could do to improve the current logo Lab proposed, it would be to sharpen the jagged edges. Oh, and we'll also need a variation for fanon namespace. Too bad, I still love Erry's logo... but I understand we eventually need a change. Nikel Talk Vote! 05:24, January 14, 2014 (UTC)

I like the look of this new logo and I think implementing it, rather than doing a contest, is the easiest and most efficient way to go about it, unless someone else wants to add their design to this discussion. Also, as people are doing, we can comment on little things about the logo that we think need fixing. Overall, however, I think this logo is the best choice to go with. ~ Waikikamukow (Anyone wanna chat?) 03:18, January 22, 2014 (UTC)

Okay so I have an updated version of the logo with a lot of the fixes applied. Thoughts? Lost Labyrinth (c)(b) 22:21, January 22, 2014 (UTC)

Much better. But still a bit wonky around the S. Joey.eyeball (talk) 03:12, January 23, 2014 (UTC)
I think it's important to remember that most of the minor issues won't be visible at the logo's standard resolution of 250 x 65... the image that Lab has posted is at a much much higher resolution (over 8 times longer and 8 times wider). -- LostInRiverview talk ~ blog 03:44, January 23, 2014 (UTC)

I've uploaded a version of Lab's logo and have displayed it here with a resolution of 250 by 65, the standard resolution for wiki logos. -- LostInRiverview talk ~ blog 03:52, January 23, 2014 (UTC)

It looks perfect. Joey.eyeball (talk) 03:54, January 23, 2014 (UTC)

Kudos to you, LostLab for creating a very nice looking logo. I like how it's in the same style as the real TS logo. I'm in support of implementing this new logo. Beds (parlare - da leggere) 14:38, January 25, 2014 (UTC)

Conclusion[edit source]

Based on the discussion, the new logo has been adopted. Note that as of this time, the old Fanon logo is still in-use, pending the outcome of the discussion below. Please take a moment to weigh in if you haven't already. - LostInRiverview talk ~ blog 20:35, January 28, 2014 (UTC)

Fanon[edit source]

I'm splitting this off into a new section in order to aid discussion. If you want to continue voicing thoughts on the logo then please do so above.

As stated, I don't currently have a variation for the fanon namespace. As suggested, I don't think we really need one for the reasons stated in my proposal. I feel that one wiki-wide logo will do the job.

So what I'm asking here is whether or not we want to continue having a separate logo for our fanon namespace. If we do reach a consensus to keep the logo then we can look into adapting the proposed logo for that exact purpose, should we also choose to adopt it as a new logo.

Discuss. Lost Labyrinth (c)(b) 21:05, January 19, 2014 (UTC)

I don't know if it's confusing. I think it's a good measure to distinguish between what's fanon and what's not. I know users won't normally check the logo just to see whether it's fanon or not, but I think both should be distinguished in some way.

I'd love it if we could keep a fanon variation for the logo, but I can't imagine how the logo would be like. I just like it if we have one. If we can't have one, well I guess we have no choice then. Nikel Talk Vote! 12:41, January 20, 2014 (UTC)

I agree with Lab, I don't think a different logo is necessary. I also think it says that the two sides - fanon and canon - are not really part of the same community, especially when the fanon logo defines it as an entirely different wiki. -- LostInRiverview talk ~ blog 13:23, January 20, 2014 (UTC)

I also agree to having one logo for both namespaces, and getting rid of the fanon logo. It can be confusing, especially for new or visiting users, and like LiR said, somewhat splits the community between canon and fanon. ~ Waikikamukow (Anyone wanna chat?) 03:18, January 22, 2014 (UTC)

To be honest, once I started I thought that there was a completely different wiki named The Sims Fanon Wiki, because of that logo. Joey.eyeball (talk) 03:22, January 22, 2014 (UTC)

I think it would be a bit pointless in having two different logos as the fanon portal is still a part of the wiki. Going to what LiR said, the fanon and canon are both part of the same wiki, therefore I feel there should only be one logo for the whole entire wiki. Beds (parlare - da leggere) 14:44, January 25, 2014 (UTC)

I'm with having just one logo as well. The Sims Fanon Wiki merged with the main Sims Wiki, with fanon-related stuff appearing in Special:RecentChanges. Technically, it's just one wiki. Two into one. One logo is enough. K6ka (talk | contribs) 21:18, January 28, 2014 (UTC)

Conclusion[edit source]

This has been open for long enough. As consensus shows that the community doesn't feel that we need a separate fanon logo, we'll be using the main wiki logo across the entire wiki. We also have our new logo in place, so we can wrap this discussion up in its entirety. Lost Labyrinth (c)(b) 13:42, February 12, 2014 (UTC)
