Architectural Designer scoring

Architectural Designer is a profession from The Sims 3: Ambitions. In this profession, Sims are given renovation requests from other neighbors throughout the neighborhood. The objectives are rather straightforward, which is to renovate other Sims' houses with the required objects. However, there are background scores on how well Sims have made renovations depending on many factors, and high scores will benefit the Sims, including payment bonus and great overall reviews.

Overall review is very important to fulfill the lifetime wish to become Home Design Hotshot, which requires a total of 100 great reviews. Practically, this amount of tally is almost impossible for Sims to achieve. This tutorial will help the players to understand the scoring system in Architectural Designer and the tips to earn great reviews more easily.

In contrast, there are 3 types of reviews: bad review, good review, and great review. Review scoring do not have a stated range or limit. Each review has range of scoring. Having score lower than 0 will give Sims a bad review, score between 0 to 1,000 will give a good review, while higher than 1,000 will give a great review. There are also some thresholds of score which determines how much Sims will earn upon finishing a renovation, as shown on the table.

Basically, Sims' career level gives a starting score on a renovation. Higher career level gives a larger starting score, listed below:

  • Level 1: 10
  • Level 2: 20
  • Level 3: 50
  • Level 4: 100
  • Level 5: 150
  • Level 6: 200
  • Level 7: 300
  • Level 8: 500
  • Level 9: 800
  • Level 10: 1,000

This means that starting at level 8, the possibility to earn great review is higher than the previous levels, and Sims will automatically get a great review at level 10 upon finishing a renovation, as long as they don't get a penalty (e.g. unfinished room, unsatisfied objects, etc.). Also, upon reporting that the renovation completes, Sims get a starting score for 100.

There are several ways to add a bonus score if Sims to perform several things. Before beginning a renovation, Sims can take measurement on the house. It might take a while to measure the entire home, but taking a measurement will give a score boost of 50, 100, or 125 based on how long the Sim takes, so try letting the Sims finish taking measurement. Also, discussing renovation with client gives a score boost of 50, 100, or 125 based on how long the Sim discusses. Take Measurement and Discuss Renovation interactions are available at level 4 and 8, respectively.

Special objects

Some objects give extra points even though they are not required for the renovation. Each plant and rug gives extra 10 points. It's not stated whether it could be either decorative plants or garden plants, or both.

Sims can get bonus by placing homemade paintings, photographs, and sculptures on a renovation. Each homemade object adds 100 on the scoring, and if any of the homemade objects are the subject of either:

  • The client,
  • The client's partner,
  • The member of the client's household, or
  • A Sim whose partner is the member of the client's household

(e.g. a painting of the client), an extra 100 points will be added for the object, making it worth 200 points. Also, extra 10 points is given per environment score of the homemade objects.

Bonus by traits

Learning the clients' traits is beneficial for architectural designers. Certain traits affect the scoring based on the renovation the Sims do. Below is the detailed scoring based on client's traits.

Artistic 0.1 points awarded per environment score of decorative objects.
Bookworm 20 points awarded per bookshelf.
Can't Stand Art Adding artworks don't deduct points.
Computer Whiz 10 points awarded per non-cheap computer.
Couch Potato 1 point awarded per comfy point of objects.
Easily Impressed Randomly awards 10 points regardless renovation content.
Evil / Hates the Outdoors 100 points awarded per room with no windows.
Frugal 0.1 points awarded per Simoleon not spent.
Loves the Outdoors 10 points awarded per window.
Natural Cook 50 points awarded per non-cheap food preparation object, 100 for non-cheap food appliance.
Party Animal 20 points awarded per bar, nectar rack, buffet table, or similar object. Stereos don't contribute any points.
Snob 0.01 points deducted per Simoleon not spent.
Technophobe Adding electronic devices don't deduct points.
Virtuoso 20 points awarded per guitar and stereo. Apparently other instruments don't count.
Workaholic 20 points awarded per desk. Computers don't contribute any points.

Scoring penalties

Other than penalties based on client's traits such as Snob, there are several factors that causes deduction of the renovation scores as well.

  1. 1,000 points are deducted for each unsatisfied required object for a renovation.
  2. 50 points are deducted for each object with blocked slots.
  3. 500 points are deducted for each object placed on an unroutable surface.
  4. 1,500 points are deducted for each unroutable object.
  5. 500 points are deducted for each broken object placed by the player.
  6. 500 points are deducted for each dirty object placed by the player.
  7. 0.5 point is deducted for each reduced environment score of objects prior to renovation.
  8. 20 points are deducted for each unlit room.
  9. 20 points are deducted for each undecorated room.

So basically, those are the things players must avoid while renovating a house.
