Plumb vs. Plum[edit source]

Question: Why does everyone call it the plumbob when it is a Plumb-Bob. (notice spelling!) --75.118.1.96 16:09, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

Possible answer: Because people are lazy and the hyphen is somewhat out of the way for a touch-typist, being on the number row. As such, plumb-bob morphs into plumbbob, which looks wrong and so is further morphed into plumbob. Another possible answer: When you see plumb-bob, you hear "plum bob" and so think of it as plumbob. People don't realize that a plumb-bob is actually a weight on a string, which may or may not look like the shape we've all come to know. Plumb in this case comes from the latin for lead, as plumb-bobs were simply lead weights.—Preceding unsigned comment added by ErzengelLichtes (talkcontribs) 07:51, June 7, 2009‎ (UTC) - Please sign your comments with ~~~~

Also in some games (I know Sims 2 life stories does) if you use the move objects cheat, its name is "Plum Bob" in sell mode.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.83.82.152 (talkcontribs) 04:39, December 31, 2010‎ (UTC) - Please sign your comments with ~~~~

Um, it's a hexagonal bipyramid; so if you can come up a term for that, bingo and you've got yourself a name.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.178.52.122 (talkcontribs) 17:34, October 19, 2011‎ (UTC) - Please sign your comments with ~~~~

TS1 PlumbBob[edit source]

The PlumbBob from TS1 looks like decagonal bipyramid. Is it worth mentioning in the geometric information section? I've never looked the PlumbBob in details before though, especially in TS1. Nikel Talk Vote! 12:18, May 21, 2013 (UTC)

Spelling and article name[edit source]

I think we should rename this page to "Plumbob" or "Plumbbob." I've seen more sources, including official sites, omit the second 'b' and I have almost never seen the second 'b' capitalized when it's included at all. As well, most sources don't treat this word as a proper noun, so it's usually not capitalized when used in a sentence. -- LostInRiverview talk ~ blog 19:11, July 28, 2014 (UTC)

Also, SimGuruSarah has spoken in favor of "plumbob." - LostInRiverview talk ~ blog 02:07, August 1, 2014 (UTC)
The "correct" spelling is PlumbBob, though The Sims series has almost always spelled it as Plumbob. For example, if moveobjects is enabled in The Sims 2, and if you select the eyedropper tool and move it over the PlumbBob, it's clearly called a "PlumBob", two B's, not three. However, I support this move because the Sims "PlumbBob" isn't even a real plumb bob. This is a plumb bob. A plumb bob is a weight with a pointed tip at the bottom, usually suspended from string. The top is not pointed, like The Sims PlumbBob is. I say we move the article to Plumbob, which currently redirects to "PlumbBob". "PlumbBob" will redirect to Plumbob to avoid creating millions and millions of redlinks across the Internet. In order to merge page histories, we will need to delete "Plumbob" and move "PlumbBob" into its place. --k6ka (talk | contribs) 02:20, August 1, 2014 (UTC)
...and forgot to say that "Plumbob" may be a word invented by the developers, much like "chumcha", "Sul sul", "Simlish", and "PlantSim" are. So "Plumbob" could be perfectly correct. --k6ka (talk | contribs) 02:22, August 1, 2014 (UTC)
I think "correct" is an incorrect term to use in this case, since the spelling does vary from game to game and source to source. The Sims for instance uses the spelling "PlumbBob" (see here). However, popular usage tends to lean towards the version with 2 B's and tends not to capitalize the first B (or indeed, capitalize the word at all, indicating that it's not a proper noun). As for the technical process of moving the page, it would be a simple move to 'Plumbob' as that page is only a redirect and has no other history. -- LostInRiverview talk ~ blog 02:27, August 1, 2014 (UTC)
I recognize that the SimGurus have made a decision, but given that it's a dumb decision, I've elected to ignore it. Ѧüя◎ґ (talk) 02:28, August 1, 2014 (UTC)
You can't ignore every dumb decision that someone has made. If you did that, you'd pretty much have to ignore all of The Sims 3 and The Sims 4. j/k -- LostInRiverview talk ~ blog 02:30, August 1, 2014 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── Well you have a good point there. Instead of changing it to Plumbob, why not add it as an alternate spelling of the word? Ѧüя◎ґ (talk) 02:36, August 1, 2014 (UTC)

(edit conflict)Oh, pah. I've only picked up and deleted the PlumbBob/Plumbob from my Sims in The Sims 1 a couple of times. I thought I would lose control of them, seeing they didn't have the PlumbBob/Plumbob, their gateway to the outside world. I guess, just to avoid tomatoes and grenades from being thrown at me, I'll just have to write "PlumbBob/Plumbob" over and over again in discussion forums. Though, I still stand by my decision to move the page. --k6ka (talk | contribs) 02:37, August 1, 2014 (UTC)
I think it would be acceptable to move it to Plumbbob, but the generally preferred spelling nowadays seems to be Plumbob. I think moving it off of PlumbBob is a good step that should be taken, but as to whether the new name should be 3B's or 2, I don't really think it matters greatly. All the redirects will be set up to lead to the right page, so ultimately the final name is a trivial question. If we're going strictly on deciding the name, my vote would be on "Plumbob," though. - LostInRiverview talk ~ blog 02:39, August 1, 2014 (UTC)
I believe since this is a made up word, whichever spelling is correct. I assume it has a lot of variations due to the word spelled differently in each series. Of course no variation is more correct than the others, but since SimGurus and The Sims 4 now tend to use "Plumbob", I suggest we just follow the current trend. Despite what SimGuruSarah has said, yes, "Plumbob" is the correct term now in The Sims 4, but of course she'd say otherwise in the past. This is basically a case of popular term usage. All is correct, but now everyone tends to use "Plumbob," so everyone thinks that's the correct term.
FWIW, The Sims 3 has inconsistent spellings. The one floating on the Sim's head and a smartphone case are spelled "Plumb Bob." The gem cut is called "Plumbbob cut". There's something called "The Plumbob Express" in the game strings, but I suppose it's a book title. Some more strings use the term "plumbob" in lowercase "p." The special painting in IP is spelled "The Evolution of Plumbob." But neither of these spellings is more correct than the others, IMO. Nikel Talk Vote! 05:13, August 1, 2014 (UTC)
/me has a headache! Good grief, people could be edit warring over this spelling all day... and, well, both of them would be right. --k6ka (talk | contribs) 11:51, August 1, 2014 (UTC)

Alright, to wrap this up, I moved the page to "Plumbob" and set up "PlumbBob", "Plumbbob", and "PlumBob" to redirect to it. I've also changed all the references to "PlumbBob" within the text except where the spelling is deliberately different. I may have missed some examples, but I think I got most of them. I opted to treat the name as a common noun, so "plumbob" isn't capitalized when used within sentences within the article. - LostInRiverview talk ~ blog 05:45, August 18, 2014 (UTC)

Maths? REALLY?[edit source]

We don't need to know about maths, we need to know about Sims! God, why are you talking about vertices and that? FunCookie (talk) 19:23, February 16, 2015 (UTC)

Because a plumb bob is a mathematical instrument in real life. --I am k6ka Talk to me! See what I have done 19:34, February 16, 2015 (UTC)
