Sims can exercise in various different ways in The Sims series. While the benefits and consequences of exercise differ slightly in each game, the general result is that the Sim builds a physical skill.

The Sims

The Sims introduced a weight machine that adult Sims could use to build their body skill. Superstar introduced an exercise machine that was functionally similar to the one in the base game. Sims can also go swimming, and will still gradually gain body skill even though the blue skill bar does not appear.

Children can swim, but will not gain any skills from doing so. Sims may also play basketball, but this will not build their body skill.

The Sims 2

The Sims 2 added more options for exercising. In addition to weight machines, any Sim that is a child or older{{confirm}} can work out in front of a stereo. Teens and older can attempt to do yoga, and various career rewards also provide opportunities for exercise. Treadmills, exercise bikes,[TS2U] goalposts, and basketball courts[TS2FT] were also introduced. If Bon Voyage is installed, Sims can do tai chi. FreeTime allowed Sims to do ballet and go jogging. Apartment Life added the ability for all Sims child and older to jump rope, allowing even poorer Sims to be able to exercise without expensive equipment.

Exercise builds the body skill for all ages, and also improves a Sim's fitness. A Sim's body shape will not change while they are exercising—only when they stop. Exercise also drains a Sim's hygiene and energy motives, meaning that they will probably need a shower afterwards.

Active Sims tend to enjoy exercise more than lazier Sims. In the game code, active Sims treat exercise machines as fun activities rather than skill-building activities, meaning that they will drop those interactions sooner than lazier Sims. This can be fixed with a mod.

The Sims 3

Exercise in The Sims 3 builds the Athletic skill. In addition to the exercise machines that can be purchased at home, The Sims 3 introduced the gym lot type that gives Sims the "Fit Atmosphere" moodlet, which would increase the rate that they would gain Athletic skill, as well as providing gym equipment for use at no charge.

Sims who are at level three of the Athletic skill can adjust their pacing so they can work out for longer before becoming fatigued. They can also get the "Pumped" moodlet from working out for long enough.

Sims will lose hygiene when they exercise. This can be mitigated slightly if the Sim is at level one of the Athletic skill and uses the "Don't Break a Sweat" ability. If a Sim exercises for long enough, they will get the Fatigued moodlet, and will be unable to work out for the duration of the moodlet.
