Young adult
Young Adult is an optional life stage added to The Sims 2 with the University expansion pack and the default age in The Sims 3.
The Sims 2
When a teen sim moves out to go to college, he or she transitions into a young adult and remains one for the duration of his or her college years.
Young Adults look similar to Adults, but have Teen Sim voices, and move slightly slower then Adults Sims.
Because the young adult stage is directly linked to college, it works a bit differently than the other five stages. Rather than being measured in days, the young adult stage is measured in semesters. The age bar on a young adult, instead of displaying how many days left in the stage as with other ages, displays what year of college the young adult is currently in (freshman, sophomore, Junior, Senior) and how many hours until their next final exam. There are 3 different icons representing on how their University course went.
If your Sim graduated from University, there will be a Golden Star to show that they finished.
If your Sim get expelled due to bad marks, there will be a red cross on the Young Adult Stage
If your Sim dropped out of University, they will have a white o on the young adult stage.
Sim semesters last for 72 hours each, and there are 8 semesters in a full college experience, meaning that under normal circumstances the young adult stage actually lasts 24 days. Dropping out, getting expelled, or getting put on academic probation can alter this. Sims also have the option of staying an additional 72 hours to say goodbye and hold a Graduation Party.
Completing each of the 4 years brings a very valuable upgrade to a Sim's capabilities:
- Freshman: 5th want slot;
- Sophomore: Opportunity to change aspiration;
- Junior: Ability to lock 2 wants/fears instead of just one;
- Senior: 6th want slot.
- If a Sim gets expelled, the sim will recieve 4th Fear.
Young adults can only reside in the "college towns"; they cannot live in the base neighborhood. Sims leaving college, for whatever reason, automatically transition to adults. However, young adults can visit their families in the base neighborhoods if invited via the telephone.
Young adults keep the same aspiration they chose as teens. However, at the start of their junior year of college, they have the opportunity to change their aspiration if the player so chooses.
Young adults have Majors instead of Careers. They can make money by working in the Dormitory cafeteria or as a barista. They can also earn money at the end of each semester for their grades. How well they have done academic wise determines the amount of money given each semester.
Note
- If you use the Tombstone of Life and Death to make them grow they will become an elder.
- If a young adult goes on vacation, they can get married or even have children. This was fixed with the Bon Voyage update.
- If you use the Tombstone of Life and Death to get pregnant your sim can have and raise a child, however this will result in a random NPC leaving the dormitory if the dorm was full.
- When they´re on their second half of senior year, a lot of adults from the base neighborhood will come, almost as if telling them ¨Hey, I´m one of the people who will live in your neighborhood, just to let you know.¨
The Sims 3
Young Adult is a default age in The Sims 3. The Sims 3 does not have college (although this may be added in a future expansion), so Young Adult Sims do not go to college. Young Adult Sims are probably 18-30 years old and they can get married, own any house they want (as long as they can afford it) and have children. Young Adults have 5 traits and take 21 days[N] to progress to the next life stage: Adult.
Young Adult females are more fertile than Adult females. Thus, we can estimate that Young Adults are between 18 and 30 years old. Apart from this difference in fertility, gameplay stays the same through young adulthood and adulthood.
Things that Young Adult can do that lower life stages can't:
- Have Children
- Get a full time job
- WooHoo
- Get Married
