Dirk Kennedy's mother, Jill Kennedy, was a working-class cleaner, working for the affluent couple Jennifer and Richard Grande. The Grande's could not have children. However, one day, while Richard had been sent to work away for 9 months, Jill revealed she was pregnant with twins. Jill revealed she couldn't sustain two more children on top of her five already. Jennifer suggested to Jill that she take one of the children. Jennifer explains how perfect the idea is. Jill agrees reluctantly.
Dirk Kennedy was born to Jill Kennedy and Austin Kennedy. Austin Kennedy had walked out on Jill while she was pregnant. Dirk was the child kept by Jill, while his sister was sent to live with Jennifer and Richard Grande. However, one day, at a park, Dirk was sitting by himself, when a young, fresh-faced girl walked up and asked to play with Dirk. Dirk agreed, and the two introduced themselves as Dirk Kennedy and Demelza Grande. The two began playing together. When Jill came to find Dirk, Jill recognised Demelza as her daughter, and told Demelza to go home. Demelza ended up moving away after, leaving Dirk alone.
Dirk and the rest of the Kennedy's were relocated after Jill's estate was knocked down. She and her family were moved to the same area Demelza and her family moved to. The two met again and bonded, Dirk introduced Demelza to his girlfriend, Lydia. The three became really good friends.
After Jennifer Grande died, Jill Kennedy took it upon herself to tell Demelza and Dirk they were actually brother and sister. Demelza and Dirk were overjoyed and began seeing each other much more regularly.
