The Newbie family is the family used for the tutorial in The Sims. The tutorial home, located at 7 Sim Lane in Neighborhood 1, includes Bob Newbie and Betty Newbie, and can be played as usual after the tutorial is complete.
Bob and Betty do not appear as playable Sims within a neighbourhood in The Sims 2 family of games apart from The Sims 2 Pets for console. As former residents of Pleasantview , the now-deceased Bob and Betty appear in the family tree view as mother and father of the playable Sim Brandi Broke, and as the grandparents of her two sons.
In The Sims 3, the family lives in Riverview, and consists of teenage Bob and his parents Robert and Mags. Their house is small but expensively and fashionably decorated, and they own a middle-range car. However, they only have §2,000 in their household funds and neither Robert nor Mags earns much money. Their first bill payment will usually cost more than half of the money they have, suggesting that they may be living beyond their means. This may be the reason why the Newbies are poor later in the series chronology. Also, in The Sims 3, the family's bio's end hints that Bob Jr. may move to Pleasantview, as the end reads: Will Bob stay and make a life in Riverview, or will he move somewhere more... pleasant?.==Onomatology==
Newbie: "a newcomer or novice, an inexperienced user of computers in general." A reference to the fact they are the tutorial family in several games.
Bob: Short for Robert, meaning "bright fame."
Betty: Short for Elizabeth, meaning "my god is oath."
Brandi: May refer to brandy, the alcoholic drink; possibly a feminine version of Brandon, which originates from the English place name.
Mags: Short for Margaret, meaning "pearl".
Buddy: Means "companion", and is therefore a popular name for dogs.
The Newbie family is the one used in The Sims by "novice and inexperienced" players. When the player first begins the game, they are prompted to go to the Newbie household. Bob's name suits him, seeing as he is famous in the sense that all Sims players are aware of him.
