In 2000, Gilligan Sr, walked out on Phrancis and Gilligan. Phrancis was devestated and became very depressed. Unfortunately, with crippling debt, no help and a very annoying child all on one plate, Phrancis decided it was best to remove herself from Gilligan's life, and subsequently killed herself.
This left Gilligan on the streets. Gilligan moved from place to place, living in abandoned restaurants, park benches, cars, mattresses. Gilligan met a young man while being desperate for money and mugged him. Gilligan was caught and arrested. He was sent to jail for a year.
Through an advertisement for a roommate, Gilligan stole some respectable clothes and went to look around a flat being offered by Lois Lipton. Gilligan liked Lois and all her friends and asked to live briefly with them. Gilligan was accepted into the group and loved by them all.
