Money trees will provide Simoleons ready for harvest approximately every five to eight Sim hours if they are watered periodically. Trees that are ready for harvest will make a "cha-ching" sound effect and will start glowing yellow. Trees can be used indefinitely as long as they are kept watered; watering them after each harvest is sufficient to keep them alive. If they are not kept watered, they will wither away. Unlike other plants, money trees cannot be overwatered.

When a Sim's aspiration level is gold or higher, that Sim will be able to harvest forty Simoleons from the money tree. However, if the Sim's aspiration level is green, there is a 50% chance they will only receive one Simoleon during harvest. If it is red, there is an 80% chance of only harvesting one Simoleon. However, there is no additional penalty for harvesting only one Simoleon, meaning that there are no risks involved with the money tree. Whether the Sim receives §40 or §1, harvesting money from the money tree fulfills the want to earn some money.

Money trees are cheap in aspiration points, so Sims who have plenty of aspiration points can afford plenty of money trees. Fortune Sims can be kept happy on a consistent basis if they invest their aspiration points into money trees. Having just ten of these trees can increase their income to a potential §400 every 8 hours, or §1200 per day. For Sims that want to earn a lot of money, money trees can certainly give a lot of extra cash to pad their wallets with.

Children can harvest from the money tree, and it is a fine source of income for child Sims.

When the money tree is ready for harvest, visitors can take the money from a money tree. To avoid this, players can either place the money trees behind a locked door, or place them inside a Sim's inventory—although money trees cannot be harvested while they're in a Sim's inventory, they will still be ready for harvest after five Sim hours, and can be harvested as soon as they are taken out of inventory.

The money tree is growable with the gardening skill in The Sims 3. There is a one in four chance of a special plant seed growing into a money tree. While fishing there is a small chance that the Sim will catch a box containing a money tree seed.

The harvest can be up to five money bags, and yields anywhere from several hundred Simoleons to several thousand Simoleons for a perfect money tree. Unlike other plants, the money tree's harvest cannot be replanted. However, money trees will yield a money tree seed when it reaches perfect quality, which will appear on the ground near them, allowing one money tree to reproduce into many. Money trees last indefinitely and their quality will improve to perfect, if they are cared for well. The money tree will explode if neglected, producing three large bills.

The money tree returns in The Sims 4: Seasons and, like The Sims 3, must be planted and grown by a Sim. The seed for the plant is available for 5,000 reward points in the aspiration rewards store. It can be planted in any season. It takes 7 days for the money tree to fully grow into a tree with golden leaves.

Upon harvest it will provide between 8,000 and 22,225 Simoleons, depending on its quality. It will not bear any fruit, however, so the only way to get more money trees is to spend another 5,000 reward points in the aspiration rewards store to get another seed, graft it on to another plant, or use Copypasto spell on either the Tree, or the seed to obtain more.

Currently, a glitch can be exploited in which a ready to be harvested money tree that is moved into the family inventory will give the Sim several money tree fruits, which can be planted and grown into additional money trees. They also sell for much more, §40,000 per a harvest of 5 money fruits.
