Bob's name fits, seeing as he had fame since every novice Sims player eventually played him (that is, if they followed the tutorial and the arrow pointing toward the Newbie lot). Mainly, this family has been added so that players could relate to ''The Sims''.

The Newbie family was used in the in-game tutorial with The Sims. The tutorial home, located at 7 Sim Lane in Neighborhood 1, included Bob Newbie and Betty Newbie, and could be played after the tutorial was complete. Bob and Betty do not appear as playable Sims within a neighbourhood in The Sims 2 games apart from Pets for consoles. As former residents of Pleasantview , the now-deceased Bob and Betty appear in the family tree view of playable Sims Brandi Broke and her sons, teen Dustin Broke and toddler Beau Broke. Brandi is their daughter, who was married to the late Skip Broke.

In The Sims 3, the family lives in Riverview, and consists of teen-aged Bob and his parents Robert and Mags. Despite the impression that might be given by their house and car, the Newbies are rather well-off, if not capital-R Rich. No one knows how Bob became poor in The Sims.

Onomatology

Newbie – "a newcomer or novice, an inexperienced user of computers in general" A reference to the fact they are the tutorial family several games.

Bob (Brandi's father) – Short for Robert, meaning "bright fame".

Betty (Brandi's mother) – Short for Elizabeth, meaning "my god is oath".

Brandi – May refer to brandy, the alcoholic drink, or possibly a feminine version of Brandon, which originates from English place names.

Mags (Brandi's paternal grandmother) – Short for Margaret, meaning pearl.

Buddy – Means "companion", and is therefore a popular name for dogs.

The Newbie family was the one used in The Sims and Pets for consoles by "novice and inexperienced" users of the Sims. When the player first begins the game, they are convinced by the game to go to the Newbie household. It was the tutorial family of the game. Bob's name fits, seeing as he had fame since every novice Sims player eventually played him (that is, if they followed the tutorial and the arrow pointing toward the Newbie lot). Mainly, this family has been added so that players could relate to The Sims.

Glitches

  • In TS1, the player can start the tutorial at 7 Sim Lane and end it before the introduction of Betty Newbie so that life goes on for Bob without her. Bob can be played as a normal Sim character then, free to marry another Sim.
  • If one rushed through the tutorial too quickly you can encounter the section about finding a job before the papergirl arrives which causes the tutorial to end on an error.
