In The Sims 3, opportunities are tasks a Sim can complete for a reward. Opportunities usually focus around a career or skill. Sims with a part-time job cannot get career opportunities.
Actions outside of work, such as schmoozing the boss or reading medical journals, can have an impact on a Sim's job performance. Opportunities can still cause a Sim to lose their job, but may actually help them get a better job in another career track.
Due to a bug[1][2] with Into the Future, it's impossible to receive Skill Opportunities as the dialog never appears. This also means special Opportunities such as building a SimBot are unobtainable. The only fix is uninstall Into the Future or use a mod to fix the broken opportunities although unknown if a such mod exists. A video showing this is seen here.
