There are many templates in use in The Sims Wiki; these are only a subset, representing some of the most important and commonly used ones. If you feel that a template belongs on this page, do not hesitate to add it.

  • Category:Templates should cover all templates in the wiki, categorized into the various subcategories.
  • The Template namespace always has all templates in the wiki, sorted alphanumerically.

What are templates?

Wiki templates provide a means to insert the same content over and over in different (or the same) pages. This saves editors the hassle of duplicating the same text again and again, and also helps ensure consistency.

Templates are generally shown with the format required to use the template (e.g. {{stub}}). Clicking the template name takes you to the template's page, where you can see what it looks like and how it is used.

Detailed instructions on the usage of each template should exist on either the template page itself (inside "noinclude" tags) or a doc subpage.

Infoboxes

Game articles

{{Game|<...>}}

  • Add this to an article describing a game.

Sim articles

{{Sim1|<...>}}, {{Sim2|<...>}}, {{Sim3|<...>}}, or {{Sim4|<...>}}

  • Add this to articles of premade Sims that only appear in a single game.

{{Unisim|<...>}}

  • Add this to articles of premade Young Adult Sims from The Sims 2: University

All other premade Sims should have the following two templates: {{Simbio-start|<...>}} and {{Simbio-end}}

Between those two templates may be any or all of the following depending on which game the Sim appears: {{Simbio1|<...>}}, {{Simbio2|<...>}}, {{Simbio3|<...>}}, and {{Simbio4|<...>}}

For console versions add the "game" parameter with the name of the game. Ex. {{Simbio1|game=Bustin' Out|...}}

Pet articles

  • Add this to articles of premade pets.

Objects

{{Object|<...>}}

  • Add this to an article about an in-game object.

Neighborhood articles

{{Neighborhood|<...>}}

Family articles

{{FamilyInfobox|<...>}}

  • Add this to an article about a premade family.

If the family appears in several games use {{Family-start}} and {{Family-end}}, with at least two of the following in between: {{Family1}}, {{Family2}}, {{Family3}}, {{Family4}}.

Article management templates

Nominate an article for deletion

Only administrators can delete pages. Other users may nominate articles for deletion.

Merging or splitting

  • If an article is a stub or a the information is part of a larger topic it may benefit by merging its contents to an existing page. It will add the article to Category:Articles for merging.

  • If you think a large article would benefit being split use this template. It can also be used when information about two unrelated things that have a similar name have been added to the same article.

Moving articles

Although anyone can move an article, you may want to get consensus from the community before moving an article. To do this you can tag it with the {{Move}} template.

Disambiguation articles

  • If you have several articles that have similar or identical names, you may wish to create a "disambiguation" page at the main article name, with the articles taking an extra phrase in brackets afterward. For example:
The Prince <-- disambiguation page, with links to:
The Prince (frog)
The Prince (human)

Stubs

{{stub}}

  • When a page has little or no useful information, then it is likely a stub. This template will include them in Category:Stubs, and is used to list which articles need expanding.

You can find more specific stubs in the stubs category.

Articles that are blank or contain no useful information will be deleted.

  • Expand can be used to indicate a section that requires expanding.

Missing info

  • Add this to a page if there is missing information about a specific title or topic. This adds the article to a sub-category of Category:Articles needing improvement depending on what info is missing.

  • Add this to a page if there is missing information from a Sim's bio. This adds the article to a sub-category of Category:Missing info depending on what info is missing.

Articles needing improvement

  • A general template

{{Clarify}}

  • Placed after a word or statement needing to be clarified possibly because of a misspelling or awkward grammar.

{{Confirm}}

  • Statements that are tagged with this template do not need to be cited by an outside source but should be confirmed by a trustworthy player or consensus.

{{Fact}}

  • The {{Fact}} template indicates that reference or verification is needed that the statement is true. If the statement is true give an outside source (using {{cite web}} where possible) or describe or provide a screenshot when or where it occurs in-game. If the statement is false, remove it completely. Do not use a strikethrough.

{{Integrate}}

  • For articles that need reorganizing.

{{Supposition}}

  • Statements tagged with this template are common conjecture, based off supposed evidence from canon sources - the statements themselves may or may not be true, but are included because they are generally believed to be true or have some basis in canon. A link to the article's talk page is included, for discussion of particularly dubious suppositions which may warrant being removed from the article altogether.

Message templates

Unreleased and newly released

If an article contains information about an unreleased or newly released product, the under development template should be used. To tag an article, add {{under development|<release type>|<game code>}}.

User notification templates

User notification templates are a series of templates for use on user talk pages to remind users of The Sims Wiki policies and guidelines.

Category templates

General category template

{{category}}

  • This can be added to categories to add general categorising details. Use in cases where it may be useful to point out to users how to categorise, such as popular categories.

Template category template

{{templatecategory}}

  • This should be added to any template-related categories, to list template-specific categorising details, which differ from those of normal pages.

Image category template

{{Imagecategory}}

  • This should be added to image-related categories, to list instructions on uploading and including images in articles.

General wiki templates

Clear

{{clr}}, plus {{clrl}} and {{clrr}}

  • This template is used to reduce the amount of non-wikicode used on pages, replacing the code <br style="clear:both;" />. Its use should generally be avoided.
  • You can use {{clr}} instead of the HTML tag that clears space below things like images, pictures and tables, so the following stuff doesn't begin until the bottom of the image, picture or table box.
  • You can also use {{clrl}} or {{clrr}} to clear only left or right floats.

Disambiguation

{{distinguish|<article name>}}

  • Use to link to another article of a similar name.

{{for|<other topic>|<article name>}}

  • Use link to another article of a similar name but a different topic. Produces For x see y.

{{for|<other topic>|<article name>|redirect=<same topic>}}

  • Use to indicate a topic that is redirected but also has different meanings. Produces "x" redirects here. For other meanings, see x (disambiguation).

Main article

  • Use at the start of a section to link to the main article on it.

Right-aligned Table of Contents

  • This template floats the table of contents (toc) on the right. It should only be used when absolutely necessary, to keep consistent design.

{{t|<template>}}

  • This template allows you to show example template code (with a link to the templates) without using the template itself. It is used extensively on this page.

Welcome

{{welcIP}} and {{welcome}}

  • The first (with longer version "welcomeIP" for those of you who like typing more) is to welcome new non-vandalistic contributors who are "anonymous", identified only by their IP number; it encourages them to register.
  • The second template is for welcoming new registered users. Should be customized for the wiki, indicating the pages we most want newcomers to visit.
  • The above two templates are very suitable for having "subst:" prefixed, because they can be edited with additions or deletions appropriate to the apparent strengths of the person being welcomed; e.g. if the contributor has already demonstrated good wiki editing skills you could delete references to pages about "how to edit".

  • Wikipedia-related templates. Use {{wikipedia}} for articles taken directly from Wikipedia, and {{wikipedia-deleted}} for articles deleted from Wikipedia.
