Door

A door from The Sims 2: Mansion & Garden Stuff.

A door is an architectural object in The Sims games. Doors must be placed on walls, as their function is to allow Sims to pass through walls. All doors are automatic; they open as a Sim approaches and close shortly after the Sim has gone through.[1][2]

Doors in The Sims 2 from various expansion packs

Certain doors come with windows that allow light to pass through.

Doors typically use two 1x1 grid space, each on the either side of the wall, and are by one story high, though certain ones may be bigger. In The Sims 4, doors with a single entrance take up and share two tites as they're centered between the two squares. Also in The Sims 4, walls are varies in height so a door may only fit higher walls. The Sims 2: University introduced a multi-story door that is two levels high, as opposed to just one.

In The Sims 2, It's said that unless the lot is an apartment lot, the door with both an indoor tile and outdoor is determined as the front door If: it is next to the letter box, OR the one that's closest to the outdoor rubbish bin, or the public phone booth.[3] It could also be believe that a door that is place last outside and at the lowest floor is chosen as the front door. This prone to be troublesome and inconvient for lots that have garage doors. In The Sims 3 and later games, doors on residential lots can be selected by the player to act as front ones. Visitors, delivery, service and Sims from the welcoming wagon will gather around waiting by after one of whom ring the doorbell of the front door.

Locking, accessibility and restrictions

Privacy

In all games doors will lock automatically behind a Sim or Pet when carrying out actions that grant them "privacy", such as using a toilet, bathing or woohooing. Other Sims will not be able to enter until the Sim has completed or cancelled the action.

Locking

The Sims does not include the ability for the player to lock doors, though lockable doors are available as custom content.

The ability to lock doors is first introduced in The Sims 2: Open for Business[4] and in The Sims 3: World Adventures. Doors can be set so that only household Sims, household and employees, or only humans are allowed access. They can also be locked to prohibit all Sims, excluding service NPCs. The Sims 3: University Life expands the feature so that individual Sims can be granted access or prohibited from using a specific door. [5]

In The Sims 4, the ability to lock door returns in patch 21. For each door, player can lock door for selected Sims. If a door is locked for at least one Sim, player can alter the lock list and allow access for specific sims.

During certain circumstances, the locking might be rendered useless. This happens particularly to prominent events like burglary or the arrival of social worker due to child neglection.

Doors and pets

Doors in The Sims: Unleashed, The Sims 2: Pets, The Sims 3: Pets, and The Sims 4: Cats & Dogs are pet-sensitive; they open for pets just as they do for Sims. In Unleashed, the only way to keep pets out of a room is to use modified doors. In The Sims 2: Pets, The Sims 3: Pets and The Sims 4: Cats & Dogs, each individual door can be set so that pets either can or cannot use it.

Other restrictions

In The Sims 3: Ambitions, a firefighter Sim on duty may be required to rescue a trapped sim in a locked room or through a series of rooms, having to chop down the doors with an axe in order to gain access

Types

Certain doors have special features to them or differ in the look but may or may not serve the same behavior.

Celebrity-only doors

The Zeddy-Lock Celebrity Security Door in The Sims: Superstar only allow Sims with 3 stars of Fame to pass. Sims who do not meet this requirement will experience route failure if they are directed to go into a space that can only be accessed through this door. The door is particularly useful for protecting awards from being stolen by the Obsessed Fan, who can normally break into houses to steal them but is unable to bypass this door.

The Sims 4: Get Famous includes the Starlet's Repose Door which similarly only allows a 3-star celebrity access through the door. The door and a dressing room will appear on the Plumbob Pictures studio lot when an actor Sim shoots a film.[confirmation needed] The expansion also adds three VIP Exclusivity Door. Player can select fame requirement for access, which may create a bouncer to guard the door.

Dorm room doors

This section describes features that are only available in The Sims 2: University.

Split
It has been suggested that this article be split into one or more articles because of Too long for a door type. Include Sims and item of the room, which are not directly related. Duplicate with the one in Dorm page..
For details and discussion, see the talk page.

The Myne Door in The Sims 2: University allows Sims to claim the door in order to secure the room beyond for themselves. These doors are present in all premade dormitory lots and are typically built there to designated individual dorm rooms. When building or modifying a dormitory, each Myne Door must be placed so the picture area faces outward, and there should only be one door leading into a dorm room. This means that multiple-occupancy rooms are not possible, nor are "suites" in which two dorm rooms share a bathroom.

When a Sim claims the door their headshot will appear on the door and only that Sim will be able to modify access permissions for other Sims. The Myne Door allows a Sim to claim ownership of a dorm room. When a Sim claims the door their headshot will appear on the door and only that Sim will be able to modify access permissions for other Sims. This picture will not change if the Sim's appearance is changed, but the player can update the picture of a playable Sim by having that Sim unclaim and reclaim the room. Dormies that move into the dorm also claim rooms; players are given a slight head-start (about an hour of game time) to claim the rooms they want the playable Sims to have. A Dormie's door will be locked if the Dormie is asleep or out of the dorm, but will be unlocked at other times. If the Dormie is asleep, the door will display a thought bubble showing a bed; if the Dormie is away, it will show a chalkboard. If the Dormie is in the room and the door is locked, the player may tell a playable Sim to knock on the door. If the Dormie's lifetime relationship with the knocking Sim is at least 20, the door will be unlocked, the contents of the room will become visible, and the player will be able to direct the Sim to enter the room. NPC residents can also knock on the door, in order to attract the claiming Sim's attention.[confirmation needed] Playable Sims will not lock or unlock their doors unless directed to by the player. A playable Sim told to lock or unlock his or her door will stand in front of it and hang or remove a standard "no entry" sign. Dormies will not do this; the signs on their doors will simply appear or disappear depending on whether the door is locked or unlocked. If a door is locked because its occupant is out of the dorm, it will unlock when that Sim returns to the dorm lot.

To maximize frame rate, rooms claimed by Dormies appear empty unless a playable Sim walks into them. This also creates a "What's going on in there!?" effect, which adds realism. However, it also means that Sims in a Dormie's room cannot be interacted with unless a playable Sim enters the room. A playable Sim can enter a Dormie's unlocked room, but cannot use "Call Over" to ask the Dormie to come out of it. The contents of these rooms, and any Sims that are in them, become visible if the player enters Buy or Build modes, or accesses a Sim's inventory.

Since Dormies' rooms appear empty, Sims in them are not animated unless a playable Sim is in the room. When a non-controllable Sim enters a Dormie's room, he or she will fade out and become invisible. Entering Buy mode will show that these Sims are simply standing where they were when they became invisible, even in rooms where the door is locked and the room's thought bubble indicates that the occupant is sleeping. This means that any items that are in Dormies' rooms will not actually be used unless a playable Sim is in the room.

If a Dormie is moved into a playable household, either on or off campus, their room will become unclaimed, and a Dormie that is not currently associated with a room will eventually claim it.

Door of Life And Death

The Door of Life And Death is an item on The Sims 3 Store. Placing it on any building allows the player to summon the Grim Reaper. Various of interesting of interactions can be performed, in which gives the Sim using it remarkable advantages:

  • Reincarnating a deceased Sim into a newborn sim or pet.
  • Requesting to impregnate Sim in a special way, allowing even male Sims to undergo the pregnancy.
  • Challenge the Grim Reaper in a guitar duel to earn an immunity reward from death.

Single-sex doors

Every game in the series features doors with male and female variations, and do not allow Sims of the opposite sex to go through. These doors can be used to construct single-sex bathrooms on community lots. Service NPCs can bypass these doors regardless of their gender.

Other doors

In The Sims 2: Apartment Life and The Sims 3: Supernatural feature a bookcase that also functions as a hidden door. They must be manually operated or opened in order for Sims to bypass the door.

The Sims 3: World Adventures introduces a hidden door that blends in with a wall and will only appear when used or when triggered by another object. Certain locked or hidden doors in tombs may require a certain puzzle to be solved in order to make rooms behind the entrance accessible for the exploring Sim.

The Sims 4: My First Pet Stuff introduces two pet doors. The smaller door is ideal for small dogs and cats while the larger door allows pets and toddlers to pass through.
