The Newbie family is a premade family who appear in most series. The family name is a pun of "newbie," which means a newcomer or novice. This is a reference since they are commonly used as a tutorial family, most notably in The Sims. The family name is also a placeholder name in most console games when players create a Sim, which is usually Chris Newbie.
The central storyline of the family involves Bob and Betty Newbie. During their teenage, they lived in Riverview, a downloadable neighborhood from The Sims 3 Store. Since both of them were still teenagers, they lived apart. Bob lived with his parents, Robert and Mags Newbie, while Betty, whose maiden name is Simovitch, lived with her parents, Vadim and Fatima Simovitch. The Newbies were new in town, and they didn't appear as a tutorial family in this neighborhood. Bob seemed to have found his lovelife in Riverview. The Newbies' house was small but rather fashionably decorated, though they only had §2,000 in their household funds.
Years later in The Sims, they are grown up. Betty was married to Bob, and took Bob's surname as Newbie. They moved to Neighborhood 1 and lived in 7 Sim Lane. In this game, the Newbies are used as a tutorial family. Players need to follow the tutorial first at the start of the game.
The Newbie family appears in The Sims 2 for console. They also appear in The Sims 2 Pets for console as a tutorial family as well. The playable members are Bob and Betty, as well as Buddy Newbie in Pets for console. Their appearances, however, are very different than the previous games. Both of their skin tones are darker than the other games.
Newbie: "a newcomer or novice, an inexperienced user of computers in general." A reference to the fact they are the tutorial family in several games. Bob: Short for Robert, meaning "bright fame." Betty: Short for Elizabeth, meaning "my god is oath." Brandi: May refer to brandy, the alcoholic drink; possibly a feminine version of Brandon, which originates from the English place name. Mags: Short for Margaret, meaning "pearl". Buddy: Means "companion", and is therefore a popular name for dogs.
The Newbie family is the one used in The Sims by "novice and inexperienced" players. When the player first begins the game, they are prompted to go to the Newbie household. Bob's name suits him, seeing as he is famous in the sense that all Sims players are aware of him.

Glitches
In The Sims, the player can start the tutorial at 7 Sim Lane and end it before the introduction of Betty Newbie so that life goes on for Bob without her. Bob can be played as a normal Sim character then, free to marry another Sim.
If one rushed through the tutorial too quickly, the player can encounter the section about finding a job before the papergirl arrives which causes the tutorial to end on an error.
