The mummy is a new Life State introduced in The Sims 3: World Adventures. Normally, mummies are NPCs but sleeping in a cursed sarcophagus can turn a Sim into one. Mummies also groan a lot, and can only awaken if a Sim looks inside its sarcophagus, or is stealing treasure.
Biology
Advantages
Mummies are very strong in comparison to normal Sims, so Sims are normally outmatched by mummies unless they have a high Martial Arts skill level. A mummy can outlive normal Sims by a number of days. Also, Mummies do not have the Energy or Bladder needs.

Becoming a Mummy
Sims are able to become a mummy themselves by sleeping in a Cursed Sarcophagus of the Kings twice for a few hours. The first time they emerge, a message will appear to the player saying that the Sim is slightly closer to the mummy world somehow. The next time he/she sleeps, they will emerge as a full-blown mummy. Sleeping in the Cursed Sarcophagus has an advantage however, a Sim's Body skill increases while they sleep. Just don't sleep in it too much.
Sims as young as Teenagers can sleep in the Cursed Sarcophagus, and so can become Mummies.
To reverse the life state and become a normal Sim again, simply sleep in the Blessed Sarcophagus of the Kings for a day or so, and when the Sim emerges they will no longer be a mummy.
Both Sarcophagi can be "bought" in Buy Mode under the category with a question mark with the "buydebug" cheat on.

Owning a Mummy
Interestingly enough, players can add their very own mummy to their Sims' home! To do so, acquire all 5 pieces of the Sarcophagus of the Blessed Kings and all 5 pieces to the Canopic Jars relic collection. Then drag the Canopic jars one by one onto the coffin and if the sacrifice is accepted after all 5, a mummy will emerge and be added to the household! Mummies can get jobs, gain skills, and even fall in love. Just remember to fire-proof the home!
A Sim that is a mummy won't be attacked by other mummies.
Fighting Mummies
An NPC mummy will normally be inside their sarcophagus resting. However, if a Sim looks inside the sarcophagus, they will rise and pick a fight with the Sim that is treasure hunting.
If the Sim happens to have a Mummy Snack in their inventory, the mummy will automatically remove it and return to their sarcophagus until they are disturbed again. A mummy can be defeated if a Sim has a very high, or mastered, Martial Arts skill, which can be trained in Shang Simla, China.
As mummies are vulnerable to fire, they can be tricked onto invisible fire traps, incinerating them.
If the Sim loses the match, they may become cursed.
Mummy's Curse
If the Sim didn't defeat the mummy, it can curse him. There are two ways to cure this curse.
One way is the Sim must plead with the sphinx in Al Simhara, explore it completely, and use "cleanse" interaction on a special statue or the Sim will pass away within 2 weeks. Within the final days of these cursed weeks, a dark black haze will slowly surround the borders of the player's computer screen whenever the affected Sim is selected, as if the vision of the hapless victim is slowly clouding over.
The second is to rebuild both King's Sarcophagi - Blessed and Cursed, sleep in the Cursed Sarcophagus first (turning the Sim into a mummy) and then in the Blessed Sarcophagus. This can be done in the Sim's home.
