Trait conflict is where a trait conflicts with another trait such as Evil conflicting with Good. Traits can have one or two conflicts with some being added in newer games of The Sims 3. In the Original The Sims 3, traits could have up to 2 conflicts but as of Generations, there are 3 traits with 3 conflicts which are Couch Potato, Dislikes Children and Easy Going[1]. With a Young Adult, it is possible to have a Sim that conflicts with 12 traits. This article contains a list of trait conflicts. Depending if the game is The Sims 3 or The Sims Medieval, relationship may be effected.
The Sims 3 and The Sims 3 (PS3/Xbox 360)
If an incompatible trait is learned, relationship will be decreased slightly. Using a social whose trait prevents the social from working (EG, Joke about Work on a Workaholic or Talk about Computers on a Technophobe) will learn the trait and may decrease the relationship if that trait has a conflict. Additionally, the Observant LTR can cause conflicting traits to be learned when the Sim starts to socialize with that Sim. Vampires' read mind can also cause conflicting traits to be learned.
If a Sim has more than one trait that both result in a conflict and shared traits, both of those actions will occur. For example, a Sim who has the Brave and Workaholic traits will result in "Trait Incompatibility" and "Talk about shared traits" respectively when the Sim learn the traits of Vladimir Schlick due to his Coward and Workaholic traits. Learning more than one conflicting trait is only possible with Observant.
The Sims Medieval
Relationship is no longer decreased when an incompatible trait is learned. In addition, learning the shared trait will no longer increase relationship. Social effectiveness from traits are same as The Sims 3.
List of traits with conflicts
Note: All traits listed here apply only to Windows and Mac OS X as well as PS3 and Xbox 360. For PS3 and Xbox 360 versions, ignore traits introduced in Expansion Packs and the Vehicle Enthusiast trait. New conflicts are in bold.
