Name Downtown
Game  The Sims 2: Nightlife
Onomatology
Not to be confused with Downtown (The Sims).
Downtown is a sub-neighborhood shipped with The Sims 2: Nightlife. There are residential lots for sale as well as community lots. When viewed in the neighborhood view, by default it is nighttime as opposed to the usual daytime for other neighborhoods and sub-neighborhoods. The player can toggle daytime/nighttime view in the bottom-left corner of the screen. Going downtown is free of charge, as is going from one lot to another.

If Seasons is installed, the seasonal progression of the sub-neighborhood is: Summer, Autumn, Winter, Spring.

Overview[edit | edit source]

Downtown does not come with any families ready to play, either in the town or in the Sim Bin. However, there is a family of ghosts that can be resurrected and played, the Tricou family as well as the Tricou family victim, Rainelle Neengia. Most of the Tricou family are buried in Gothier Green Lawns, the graveyard next to the family mansion. Across the road from the water tower there is a crashed UFO site which is a significantly smaller crater than Strangetown's, this may be a reference to the SimCity games, and their infamous UFO attacks.

Downtown has a wide variety of townies and also introduces grand vampires, Mr. Big and The Diva.

Downtown offers many community lots, and these lots are the main attraction of the neighborhood and The Sims 2: Nightlife itself. There are various kinds of lots, including nightclubs, restaurants, karaokes, bars, hangouts, bowling alleys, boutiques, groceries, and so on. These lots contain many elements that reflect nightlife lots. If The Sims 2: University is installed, some lots will feature objects from that expansion pack as well, such as the Sellafone Gadget Kiosk, bubble blower, pool table, and many University decors. Townies and Non-playable characters will appear on these lots like on normal community lots. It is also the only place where Grand Vampires can appear wandering, and they will only appear at night.

Sims may dine at restaurants and can buy all food that can be prepared by a Sim with maxed cooking skill, except for instant meals and snacks. Players who want a Sim to eat for free have two options:

  • Skip out on the bill, which involves getting out of the restaurant before being seen by the host/ess.
  • A Sim who eats at many restaurants may get coupons for a free meal in the mail.

If The Sims 2: Open for Business is installed, Sims can start a business in the downtown, if it's on a community lot. Special NPCs such as grand vampires can visit the lot.

Living in Downtown[edit | edit source]

It is completely possible to live in Downtown, as it allows to build and place residential lots, and also includes its own selection of residential lots. Some of these houses are starter homes and all of them contain a driveway, and some have a garage attached to them. Most of these houses are remodeled versions of the pre-made houses in the lots and houses bin that were shipped with Nightlife.

When a group of neighbors appear to welcome a new family, they'll be randomly chosen playable Sims from the main town, unless there is already a family living in Downtown. The call invite for an outing will be exactly the same, and will also request to visit the community lot in the downtown.
