Sometimes you'll struggle to find out what career your sim suits. What career will suit my sim's personality? Will it be compatible with my sim's lifestyle? Will it bring them in the long run?
This tutorial is to help players determine which career will be best to suit the Sims in The Sims 3. Essentially, what job suits with a Sim depends on their traits, which simply determine their lifetime wish, and their current wish.

Profit
This tutorial is only for The Sims 3 If you want to add info about The Sims or The Sims 2 you are free to do so.
If profit and earnings is what the players are really looking for, the simple answer is the Medical career. The top of Medical career (World Renowned Surgeon) has the highest earnings per week, while Military (Astronaut) has the lowest earnings per week, as Sims only work once per week.

Lifetime Wish
Basics
Almost all careers in all branches as well as professions have Lifetime Wishes, with the exception of Education, Daycare, Band, Art Appraiser, Video Game Developer, and Sports Agent. If the players are willing to fulfill Sims' lifetime wish, following it will be the best option for them.

Some other Lifetime Wishes can also determine the job for Sims as self-employed:
There are many basics to rely on. Wishes, traits and skills. Sometimes you are forced to do a certain work due to dependents or chores for example cleaning the house or repairing.
*Alchemist: Alchemy Artisan
*Angler: Presenting the Perfect Private Aquarium
*Band: Golden Tongue / Golden Fingers, Master of the Arts, One Sim Band
*Bot Builder: More than a Machine
*Gardener: The Perfect Garden, Greener Gardens
*Horseman: Jockey
*Inventor: Descendant of da Vinci, Monster Maker
*Nectar Maker: Bottomless Nectar Cellar
*Painter: Illustrious Author, Master of the Arts, Visionary, Descendant of da Vinci
*Photographer: World-Class Gallery, Visionary
*Scuba Diver: Deep Sea Diver
*Sculptor: Descendant of da Vinci
*Writer: Illustrious Author, Professional Author

Thus, when a Sim doesn't have a lifetime wish for a particular career or even skill career, consider employing them in the preceding careers. Of course, players are free to do one's will.
Wishes
Traits
Your wishes are a good guideline to start. If you move a household in, usually the first wish you get is to get employed in a certain career path based on traits, lifetime wish or an event. For example you may get a wish to work in the criminal career track if the sim does a mean interaction. Sometimes when a sim gain a skill point in a skill you may get a wish to follow in a career track that includes that skill to advance. For example if a sim gain a point in athletic you may get a wish to work in professional sports.
Other than Lifetime Wish, traits will also help determine the suitable jobs. Here are the traits that will be helpful for certain careers:

Lifetime Rewards
Skills are very useful in deciding what career is the best for your sim and if it will bring you in the long run. Also if you'll be able to master the career. In The Sims 3 you don't really need skills to get promoted, but it will put your sim under pressure and has to work harder. So the logical way is to work on your skills so your sim has a better chance to advance or in other words being promoted.
Some lifetime rewards are very helpful with Sims' jobs, depending on what they do for their living. Most of these rewards have impact to some careers, while no benefits in other careers.

;Basic careers
The only career that doesn't use a skill is business.
All rabbit hole careers are quite simple and straightforward. Professional Slacker enables Sims to slack off without reducing their performance as well as the risk of being demoted. Office Hero makes Sims build their relationship with coworkers while at work twice as fast. Multi-Tasker will also be helpful, and Vacationer enables Sims to take any day-offs as they please.

;Professions
Others
All professions or active careers from Ambitions, Generations, as well as Showtime can earn bigger weekly stipends with Professional Simoleon Booster. Entrepreneurial Mindset enables Sims to earn performance / experience faster.

;Self-Employment
There are more than just skills and traits.
Different Lifetime Rewards give different impacts and benefits for different self-employment careers, but some also have global benefits. Suave Seller is useful for Sims who work as Angler, Gardener, Inventor, Nectar Maker, Painter, Photographer, and Sculptor, because this reward has direct impact from crafted objects sold in consignment store.

Meanwhile, these rewards are only useful for the following careers.
Vampires
*Super Green Thumb: Gardener
*Acclaimed Author: Writer
*Extra Creative: Painter
*Efficient Inventor: Inventor
*Artisan Crafter: Sculptor
*The Next Big Thing: Band
*Super Nanny: Daycare
*Engaging, That Was Deliberate: Singer, Acrobat, and Magician
*Better Mixologist: Mixologist (While this is technically not a self-employment career, this reward is useful for Sims who mix drinks for living)
*Lungs of Steel: Scuba Diver

Vampires should take "night-jobs", like the culinary or get self employment. The benefit of being a vampire is faster skill building. Take this into account.

Toddlers & Babies
Sometimes babysitters are not trustable. Mostly they don't teach skills like, walking & talking. So your sim has to stay at home to take care of the baby/toddler. But if your sim has to work, a part-time job, being self-employed or working in the military (The career with the least workdays).

Budget
If your sim is on 'n tight budget, and you can't afford skill objects. You can be in the Culinary or Business career. You have to make food for yourself, right? So your sim, will gain the cooking skill when you make a meal. And in the business career you need no skills.

Chores
If your sim's home is always full of dishes and rubbish. Or if the same stove always breaks and you can't replace it and you have repair it often.. You have to get money but you are constantly swamped with chores. Well you have to do the same as you would if you have toddlers. (Look above)

Notes
*The Military is a good full-time job because it has the fewest workdays and the pay is good. One problem is you have to build two skills

*The Culinary is tough because shifts begin 3:00pm to 9:00pm in the evening and your sim would have to be at work for when others will do skill building, tend to their needs.

This tutorial is to help players determine which career will be best to suit the Sims in The Sims 3. Essentially, what job suits with a Sim depends on their traits, which simply determine their lifetime wish, and their current wish.

Profit[edit | edit source]

If profit and earnings is what the players are really looking for, the simple answer is the Medical career. The top of Medical career (World Renowned Surgeon) has the highest earnings per week, while Military (Astronaut) has the lowest earnings per week, as Sims only work once per week.

Lifetime Wish[edit | edit source]

Almost all careers in all branches as well as professions have Lifetime Wishes, with the exception of Education, Daycare, Band, Art Appraiser, Video Game Developer, and Sports Agent. If the players are willing to fulfill Sims' lifetime wish, following it will be the best option for them.

Some other Lifetime Wishes can also determine the job for Sims as self-employed:

 • Alchemist: Alchemy Artisan
 • Angler: Presenting the Perfect Private Aquarium
 • Band: Golden Tongue / Golden Fingers, Master of the Arts, One Sim Band
 • Bot Builder: More than a Machine
 • Gardener: The Perfect Garden, Greener Gardens
 • Horseman: Jockey
 • Inventor: Descendant of da Vinci, Monster Maker
 • Nectar Maker: Bottomless Nectar Cellar
 • Painter: Illustrious Author, Master of the Arts, Visionary, Descendant of da Vinci
 • Photographer: World-Class Gallery, Visionary
 • Scuba Diver: Deep Sea Diver
 • Sculptor: Descendant of da Vinci
 • Writer: Illustrious Author, Professional Author

Thus, when a Sim doesn't have a lifetime wish for a particular career or even skill career, consider employing them in the preceding careers. Of course, players are free to do one's will.

Traits[edit | edit source]

Other than Lifetime Wish, traits will also help determine the suitable jobs. Here are the traits that will be helpful for certain careers:

Self-employment careers

Lifetime Rewards[edit | edit source]

Some lifetime rewards are very helpful with Sims' jobs, depending on what they do for their living. Most of these rewards have impact to some careers, while no benefits in other careers.

Basic careers

All rabbit hole careers are quite simple and straightforward. Professional Slacker enables Sims to slack off without reducing their performance as well as the risk of being demoted. Office Hero makes Sims build their relationship with coworkers while at work twice as fast. Multi-Tasker will also be helpful, and Vacationer enables Sims to take any day-offs as they please.

Professions

All professions or active careers from Ambitions, Generations, as well as Showtime can earn bigger weekly stipends with Professional Simoleon Booster. Entrepreneurial Mindset enables Sims to earn performance / experience faster.

Self-Employment

Different Lifetime Rewards give different impacts and benefits for different self-employment careers, but some also have global benefits. Suave Seller is useful for Sims who work as Angler, Gardener, Inventor, Nectar Maker, Painter, Photographer, and Sculptor, because this reward has direct impact from crafted objects sold in consignment store.

Meanwhile, these rewards are only useful for the following careers.

 • Super Green Thumb: Gardener
 • Acclaimed Author: Writer
 • Extra Creative: Painter
 • Efficient Inventor: Inventor
 • Artisan Crafter: Sculptor
 • The Next Big Thing: Band
 • Super Nanny: Daycare
 • Engaging, That Was Deliberate: Singer, Acrobat, and Magician
 • Better Mixologist: Mixologist (While this is technically not a self-employment career, this reward is useful for Sims who mix drinks for living)
 • Lungs of Steel: Scuba Diver
