If an incompatible trait is learned, relationship will be decreased slightly. Using a social whose trait prevents the social from working, for example a joke about work on a [[Workaholic]] or "Talk about Computers" on a [[Technophobe]], will learn the trait and ''may'' decrease the relationship if that trait has a conflict. Additionally, the Observant LTR can cause conflicting traits to be learned when the Sim starts to socialize with that Sim. Vampires' ability to read mind makes them to learn conflicting traits faster.

Trait conflict is a situtation where a trait can't be chosen due to presence of particular traits, such as Evil conflicting with Good. Traits can have one or two conflicts with some being added in expansion packs. In the The Sims 3, traits could have up to 2 conflicts, but as of Showtime, there are 7 traits with 3 conflicts: Couch Potato, Dislikes Children, Coward, Cat Person, Dog Person, Equestrian, and Animal Lover. In The Sims 3 for Wii, Easy Going will also conflict with 3 traits. With a young adult, it is possible to have a Sim that conflicts with 12 traits[clarification needed]. This article contains a list of trait conflicts.

The Sims 3 and The Sims 3 (console)

If an incompatible trait is learned, relationship will be decreased slightly. Using a social whose trait prevents the social from working, for example a joke about work on a Workaholic or "Talk about Computers" on a Technophobe, will learn the trait and may decrease the relationship if that trait has a conflict. Observant Lifetime Reward can cause conflicting traits to be learned when the Sim starts to socialize with that Sim. Vampires' ability to read mind makes them to learn conflicting traits faster.

If a Sim has more than one trait that both result in a conflict and share traits as well, both positive and negative interactions will occur.

The Sims Medieval

Relationship is no longer decreased when an incompatible trait is learned. In addition, learning the shared trait will no longer increase relationship. Social effectiveness from traits are same as The Sims 3.
