With FreeTime, custom radio stations can be created from the audio options menu. Players are able to create and name their own custom radio stations, and choose a playlist of songs to be played on it. Songs from any existing radio station, as well as all Build Mode, Buy Mode, Create-A-Sim, and Neighborhood View music can be added to the custom station. All custom radio stations are grouped under the "Custom Station..." pie menu and can be played on any stereo in-game, but cannot be played on wall-mounted speakers.

The console version of The Sims 2 features nine radio stations with entirely unique music, but reuses music from The Sims 2 Nightlife for the different modes of the game. Many of the songs were originally recorded for The Urbz: Sims in the City and were held over to be used in The Urbz 2, which was ultimately refactored into The Sims 2. Other songs in the game are remastered versions of existing songs from selected artists' work.

After purchasing a sound system, from a small transistor to a Hi-Fi surround system, Sims will be able to listen to music through radio stations covering different music genres. Some games and expansions even allow players to add their own radio stations by using music from their computer. DJ booths typically don't feature the regular radio stations. They have unique genres of music that can be played instead, which the games internally treat the same as other radio stations.

The Sims Medieval is the only game to not feature any radio stations as radios are anachronistic to the time period. Instead, background music is played when viewing inside buildings.

Radio stations[edit | edit source]

The Sims[edit | edit source]

The Sims features 9 radio stations, four of which are in the base game and the rest introduced with House Party. Other expansions add stations that can only be heard on community lots, and are produced from dedicated wall speakers.

 • Orchestra (Return of the Vacuum Tube only)

The Sims Online[edit | edit source]

The Sims Online features all of the same stations as The Sims, excluding the dedicated speaker stations included with Unleashed and Superstar. The game also introduces three unique radio stations:

 • Horror
 • Old World
 • Sci-Fi

The Sims Bustin' Out[edit | edit source]

The Sims Bustin' Out features six radio stations, four of which contain original music created specifically for the game. The Bluegrass and Techno stations reuse music from The Sims, House Party, and Superstar.

 • Bluegrass
 • Hip-Hop
 • Metal
 • Pop
 • Smooth Jazz
 • Techno

The Urbz: Sims in the City[edit | edit source]

Each district of Urbzville in The Urbz: Sims in the City has its own radio station (except for Skyline Beach, which shares the same station as Cozmo Street). Each station is unlocked for selection after its associated district is visited for the first time.

The Sims 2[edit | edit source]

The Sims 2 features 20 different radio stations, as well as an additional Holiday-themed station that is only available to listen to on a specific stereo. An additional 4 stations are exclusive to the DJ booth. 6 stations are available with the base game, with others being introduced through expansion packs. Each expansion and stuff pack also added new music to the existing stations as well, many of which are Simlish versions of real-life songs.

All stations except for College Rock and Jazz have a corresponding wall-mounted speaker which only plays that station, and can only be placed on community lots.[n 2] Some expansion and stuff packs also added to existing stations.

With FreeTime, custom radio stations can be created from the audio options menu. Players are able to create and name their own custom radio stations, and choose a playlist of songs to be played on it. Songs from any existing radio station, as well as all build mode, buy mode, Create a Sim, and neighborhood view music can be added to the custom station. All custom radio stations are grouped under the "Custom Station..." pie menu and can be played on any stereo in-game, but cannot be played on wall-mounted speakers.

The Sims 2 (console)[edit | edit source]

The console version of The Sims 2 features nine radio stations with entirely unique music, but reuses music from The Sims 2 Nightlife for the different modes of the game. Many of the songs were originally recorded for The Urbz: Sims in the City and were held over to be used in The Urbz 2, which was ultimately refactored into The Sims 2. Other songs in the game are remastered versions of existing songs from selected artists' work.

Several real-life songs were rerecorded into Simlish, and can be played individually on a stereo, much like selecting a radio station. These artists are Fischerspooner, Kitty Shack, MXPX, Paramore, Reggie & the Full Effect, and Trivium.

The Sims 3 features 27 radio stations, containing a mixture of original music, Simlish versions of real-world music, and reused music from previous games in the series. 6 stations are available with the base game, with others being introduced through expansion packs and stuff packs.

Sims can have a favorite station set for them in Create a Sim. They will gain a +40 "Enjoying Music" moodlet when listening to their favourite station, and will select it automatically when dancing or autonomously turning on the stereo.

The Custom station allows players to add their own custom music to the game. Unlike The Sims 2, it's not possible to create other custom radio stations without mods.

All other stations are introduced with expansion packs, game packs, and stuff packs.

Sims can select their favorite music genres with the likes and dislikes system in Create a Sim.

Unlike previous games, there are no dedicated custom radio stations in The Sims 4. Custom music can be added (with the exception of Talk Radio) to existing stations. The Talk Radio station is also unique in that Sims cannot dance to it.
