Gems, metals, space rocks, beetles, and butterflies are collectibles from The Sims 3. With the Ambitions expansion, Sims can also collect Lesser Spirits. With the World Adventures, it is also possible to transform objects. Collecting is not a skill, so it does not have a skill progress bar.

Collecting, while not defined in the game, did exist to some extent in The Sims Castaway Stories. In order to survive, Sims could gain resources by collecting various debris across the island, such as metal, wood, grass or bamboo. Sims could also earn food by gathering fruit from different trees or by fishing or spearing fish.
The lifetime reward Collection Helper can highlight the collectibles on the map.

The lifetime reward Collection Helper can highlight the collectibles on the map. To use the Collection Helper, the player must first choose a filter. Then, collectibles will appear in the city map. Also, if the collectible of the selected type is on the camera bounds and the game is not paused, the collectible will be marked by a conspicuous light that marks the spot. If the game is paused, the light will not appear, but if the spotter light is already there, pausing the game in itself will not eliminate the sparkling light.

;Gem Collector
:Collect 10 types of gems, and the rarest gem cut shape will be bestowed upon your Sim! Watch out... it's valuable!
:Note: 10 types total, 10% per type (with base game, WA introduces more, making it only 10 required)

If you see a collectible, you can click on it and select 'catch' if it is an insect, or 'collect' if it is a seed, gem or a rock. In The Sims 3: Pets dogs with the Hunting Skill can also sniff out collectibles. Collectibles that dogs bring home for Sims will not count toward any collection goals in the Sim's skill journals, even if the Sim orders the dog to find it; therefore it is not a good idea to send Fido out in hopes of completing any challenge (such as collecting all gem types for the heart cut). Dogs with a high Hunting skill however, will get the ability to "Locate Collectible" which works in a manner similar to the Collection Helper.
;Metal Collector
:Find 5 metals, and your Sim will routinely get additional Ingots returned in the mail.
:Note: 5 types total, 20% per type (WA adds more, making it only 5 required)

A Sim who has collected an insect, may donate it to the Science Lab for money. The rarer the insect, the more money they will receive.
;Amateur Rock Finder
:Once your Sim finds at least half of the varieties of space rocks, it will be easier to find ones you haven't yet stumbled across.

Players can track the number of collectibles a Sim has collected by using the collecting journal, which is similar to a skill journal and can be found in the same area.
;Awesomest Rock Collector in the Universe
:Find all the space rocks, and your Sim will have more luck collecting ones of higher value.
:Note: 33 types total, <math>3.\overline{03}\%</math> per type

Collecting is a skill not shown in the skills tab. Instead, it is a special skill only shown in the skill journal.
;Butterfly Collector
:Catch one of each type of butterfly to become a Butterfly Collector. Sims with this title are learned in the ways of the insect and will have an easier time finding beetles and butterflies.

Amateur Rock Finder
clr

: Once your Sim finds at least half of the varieties of space rocks, it will be easier to find ones you haven't yet stumbled across.
Tiberium
Awesomest Rock Collector in the Universe
Tiberium is a special gem. As an ore, it is worth §75-125. When the ore is kept in inventory, Sims will become nauseous. If left out, there's a good chance the ore will change into a Large Spire Cut which glows green. Sims can also get it cut, but only the Spire Cut and it is not nearly as valuable. In both ore and spire form, it periodically puts off a glowing green "splash" and has a soft "ping" sort of noise that goes off at the same time. In Large Spire form it is incredibly valuable - upwards of 40,000 simoleons.

: Find all the space rocks, and your Sim will have more luck collecting ones of higher value.
Rare Gem locations
Rainbow Gem Spawn Locations

Butterfly Collector
Near the beach, across the road from the three vacant lots on Redwood Pkwy, between a large pine tree and a big rock.

: Catch 10 types of butterflies to become a Butterfly Collector. Sims with this title are learned in the ways of the insect and will have an easier time finding beetles and butterflies.

Firefly Collector
On a small hill to the right of the path leading up to the mine on Pinochle Point.

: Catch all the different fireflies to become a champion Firefly Collector! Having found all of the firefly varieties, you'll have a much easier time collecting more fireflies and other insects.

Beetle Collector

: Catch 10 types of beetles, and your sim will never fail at catching butterflies or beetles again.
Right behind Outstanding Citizen Warehouse Corp, near the dumpster and pink tree. May spawn outside the fence, or inside it.

Mushroom Collector

: Find 7 unique mushrooms, and the quality of mushrooms grown will increase.

Nanite Collector
Pink Diamond Spawn Locations

: Collect at least one of each type of Nanite, and wild Nanites will start to appear around your personal Bot Building Station!
Near the beach, on the hill below Wagner's Repose on Redwood Pkwy.

Trivia
*Although the Collection Helper helps track collectibles, it does not explicitly state what the item actually is. On the other hand, the collection Opportunity for kids/teens in which the said Sim is ordered to collect metal/gem/insects will not only locate all types of the needed material, but also state the type of the material. This makes it easy for the player to associate places with specific spawns.
*Similarly, several World Adventures quests may require a Sim to gather some metal or gems although unlike the opportunity for the underage it only reveals the required material (e.g. copper will not be marked when the quest demands platinum). Similarly, the Opportunity that asks the Sim to gather Red Assassin Bug will mark the location of the said bugs on the map.

Cuts
Gems may be sent to the gem-cutter and cut into the following cuts. You start with the Emerald cut, and gain cuts by cutting gems.

Sometimes the gemcutters will return an uncut gem, saying that it is actually a Mysterious Mr. Gnome in disguise.

The table lists both when you break even with a particular cut, and when a cut begins yielding better profit than the previous cut.

For example, if a gem is worth §47, an oval cut provides §70 while the Pear cut yields §82. Factoring in the cost of the gem and the cost of cutting the gem, the Oval cut provides a §3 profit while the Pear cut yields no profit. The Pear cut does not start providing more profit than the Oval cut until the original worth is §60, as listed below.

Metals
Metals are found in ore form, and can be smelted into ingots for §40.

Sometimes the foundry will return an ore, saying that it is actually a Mysterious Mr. Gnome in disguise.

Smelted ingots are worth 175% of their original cost, and so the raw metal must be worth §54 to offset the §40 cost of smelting and break even.

The "Breaking Even" equation is as follows: §54 (Cost of Ingot) * 1.75 (Smelting Worth Modifier) - §54 (Cost of Ingot) - §40 (Cost of Smelting) = §0.5; thus this is the lowest whole number that does not lose money.

Many, many editors have contended that §23 is "breaking even". Plugging into the correct equation, §23 * 1.75 - §23 - §40 = -§22.75, and thus is losing money. If you were to sell the raw ore, you would have made §23 and paid nothing, for a profit of §23, whereas if you mail it to the smelter, you will have paid §40 and made §40.25, for a profit of §0.25. It is far more worthwhile to sell a raw ore up to §54, at which point it becomes worthwhile to smelt it.

Rocks
These are meteorites, space rocks that have fallen from the heavens. They come in three varieties: Tiny, Large and Gigantic 2x3 Space Rock (spotted via the telescope using 'Search Galaxy', there will be a message telling you that a sim has seen it and tell you that you can find where it is on map view) it is also possible to find gigantic space rocks in trash cans. Initial appraisal appears to be based on their weight, so naturally Large Space Rocks are worth more than Tiny Space Rocks. However, your sim may Analyze a space rock, which will result in it being one of the below types. Each type may be worth more or less than initial appraisal. Finding half the rocks makes it easier to find the other half, and finding all the rocks results in finding the more expensive ones more often.

Rocks can be found using the "Rocks and Gems" setting on the Collection Helper. Your sim may also spot a meteor falling while using the telescope, which will mark its position on the map. Sometimes when buying a house an event will pop up that the house you purchased was struck by a meteor, and ask if you want to accept the challenge. Doing so results in several Large Space Rocks and Tiny Space Rocks scattering the home (along with fire damage).

With a high enough Martial Arts skill, a Sim can break these rocks on a board to reveal random gems. In addition to the normal gems, space rocks may very rarely contain Tiberium (from the Command and Conquer series). Tiberium has a unique cut (Spire Cut) that allows it to glow in the dark, but keeping it in a Sim's inventory will make the Sim nauseous.

The Sims 3

Collecting

A Sim catching a butterfly.

Not to be confused with Collecting (The Sims 4).

A Sim who has collected an insect, may donate it to the Science Lab for money. The rarer the insect, the more money they will receive.

Players can track the number of collectibles a Sim has collected by using the collecting journal, which is similar to a skill journal and can be found in the same area.

Collecting is a skill not shown in the skills tab. Instead, it is a special skill only shown in the skill journal.

Metal Collector

Find 5 unique metals, and your Sim will routinely get additional ingots returned in the mail.

Once your Sim finds at least half of the varieties of space rocks, it will be easier to find ones you haven't yet stumbled across.

Beetle Collector

Catch 10 types of beetles, and your sim will never fail at catching butterflies or beetles again.

Mushroom Collector

Find 7 unique mushrooms, and the quality of mushrooms grown will increase.

Nanite Collector

Collect at least one of each type of Nanite, and wild Nanites will start to appear around your personal Bot Building Station!

Trivia[edit | edit source]

 • Although the Collection Helper helps track collectibles, it does not explicitly state what the item actually is. On the other hand, the collection Opportunity for kids/teens in which the said Sim is ordered to collect metal/gem/insects will not only locate all types of the needed material, but also state the type of the material. This makes it easy for the player to associate places with specific spawns.
 • Similarly, several World Adventures quests may require a Sim to gather some metal or gems although unlike the opportunity for the underage it only reveals the required material (e.g. copper will not be marked when the quest demands platinum). Similarly, the Opportunity that asks the Sim to gather Red Assassin Bug will mark the location of the said bugs on the map.
