Rabbit hole

The Soil and Water Research Facility in Riverview, an example of a rabbit hole.

A rabbit hole is a massive Build mode object, that works as a community building in The Sims 3 which Sims can visit. The player can not see Sims while they are inside a rabbit hole.

Usually they are lot-sized objects (with exception of the cemetery mausoleum). They can provide either a moodlet or an item for a Sim's inventory, or be a workplace for the Sim.

Rabbit holes dictate the assignment of a lot.

Rabbit holes may be interacted with in a number of ways, depending on the Sim being controlled. Teen and adult Sims can go to rabbit holes in order to get full or part-time jobs. Rabbit holes such as the bistro and spa offer Sims services for a set fee. The bookstore and supermarket offer goods for purchase (which are added to the Sim's inventory).

Several rabbit holes offer skill classes.

Some rabbit hole buildings used in Riverview are identical to ones in Sunset Valley, the original neighborhood shipped with the game, though there may be differences in size. A few notable variations are:

  • The city hall in Riverview is a reduced version of the City Hall in Sunset Valley
  • The military base in Sunset Valley is much larger than the one in Riverview, and it has a runway with a space shuttle launching platform
  • The science lab in Riverview does not have a dome

Multiple-function rabbit holes

The Sims 3: Late Night, with the featured neighborhood Bridgeport, introduced rabbit holes with multiple functions, usually called multi-rabbit holes, for example Restaurant and Business. The Sims 3: Pets contains Appaloosa Plains, which introduces several new multiple-function rabbit holes (School & Stadium, Hospital & Laboratory, etc).

Similar objects in The Sims 2

Some expansions in The Sims 2 have objects which Sims can enter and interact with, while obscured from the player, so they can also be considered rabbit holes. Most are small, such as the photo booth[TS2:N] and the tent[TS2:BV]. Some of these allow WooHoo. The largest one is the Pirate ship[TS2:BV].
